Nigeria is the largest economy in Africa, and its poised to become an even larger economic player in the years to come. 

More money means that more is on the line. All of that pressure built up this week to the presidential election, in which opponent Muhammadu Buhari defeated incumbent Goodluck Jonathan in a tightly contested race. 

This was the first time Presidential power had transitioned democratically in the country. 

In addition to the economy, Boko Haram and government corruption were key issues. You can see how the candidates differed on these issues here.

Buhari’s platform includes addressing poverty, ending government corruption, and snuffing out the insidious Boko Haram.

If anyone can do it, Buhari – an ex-military ruler - would be the guy. In his first address to the nation, he stated,

Boko Haram will soon know the strength of our collective will and commitment to rid this nation of terror and bring back peace

The success of a peaceful election is worth celebrating, but Buhari recognizes that the work begins now. Nigeria, and the rest of the world, is watching with hopeful eyes.
