Unsettling violence has once more erupted in the Middle East–this time, in the heart of Israel.
The latest incident surrounds Jerusalem’s prominent holy site for both Judaism and Islam. The global Jewish community knows it as the Temple Mount; Muslims call it Haram al-Sharif, the Noble Sanctuary.
Resulting uproar in East Jerusalem and the West Bank was quelled just in time for Muslim prayers at the site on Friday. The underlying conflict won’t settle so quickly.
As a matter of fact, the site’s ownership may have opened an entirely new Pandora’s Box–whose contents may include raised contention between Israel and Jordan, who have a deep interest in the site; as well as scrutiny over the Palestinian Authority’s strength in the West Bank.
Tensions are high and, like so many, we at USDemocrazy are concerned that things could unravel quickly.
Is it possible that we will see a resolution to these problems in our life time?
