You get a new notification from your smartphone… Is it a retweet? A text from a friend? News that a U.S. drone strike killed 2 in Yemen? Wait, what?
A new app created by Josh Begley, Metadata+, notifies downloaders every time the United States has a drone strike. For every attack, users receive a notification that state the date, location, and victims of the attack. How the app obtains the data is explained here.
Apple initially had problems with the app and denied it 5 times. It was finally approved when “drone” was removed from the title.
Begley comments on his app:
“Do we want to be as connected to our foreign policy as we are to our smartphones?”
With the government reported that approximately 4,700 deaths from drone strikes, this app provides users with data that is often ignored in the news.
For those without an iPhone, you can follow the twitter stream here.
