If you were a billionaire, how would you spend your money?
Big house? Fast cars? How about Immigration reform?
This week, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerburg revealed official details about a new political action committee he is leading focusing on immigration reform.
But this is not just your average immigration reform… this is for those smart immigrants.
The group, called FWD.us is sponsored by technology moguls in Silicon Valley and will be focusing on the education and scientific research.
In a piece for the Washington Post Zuckerburg said,
“We believe that we have the responsibility to work together to ensure that all members of our society gain from the rewards of the modern knowledge economy.”
Since the success of our economy is based on who has the best ideas, Zuckerburg advocates that America try to cultivate the best minds no matter what country they come from.
He questions why we “”kick out more than 40 percent of math and science graduate students who are not U.S. citizens after educating them.” Then he further takes issue with the small number of H-1B visas for skilled workers the government supplies each year.
Some policy analysts including Daniel Costa do not agree with Zuckerburg’s plan to issue more H-1b visas.
A study by the Government Accountability Office showed that 54% of those on H-1Bs were paid at the lowest levels allowed and that the majority of workers for the outsourcing firms were sent back after their visas expired.
So what do you think of these tech mogul’s stance on immigration? Is America missing out people who could be vital members to our knowledge economy?
