These days, it’s hard to get into college unless you started a fake charity, cured a disease or have gay parents. At least, that’s what it takes according to Suzy Lee Weiss.
The senior at Taylor Allderdice School in Pittsburgh made the news this week after the The Wall Street Journal published her bitter op-ed about being rejected from many of the colleges she applied to. Among other things, Weiss blames her failure to get into her top choices because she offers “about as much diversity as a saltine cracker.” She also pokes fun at how many other high schoolers are trying to pad their resumes in order to beat the competition:
“I should’ve done what I knew was best—go to Africa, scoop up some suffering child, take a few pictures, and write my essays about how spending that afternoon with Kinto changed my life. Because everyone knows that if you don’t have anything difficult going on in your own life, you should just hop on a plane so you’re able to talk about what other people have to deal with.”
And while Weiss may have a point at the lengths people go to now to set themselves apart when applying to college, many people have criticized her piece for showing how ungrateful and entitled young people are becoming.
During an appearance on the Today Show, Weiss attempted to defend her article. She explained that the piece is only meant to be satire—she has a lot of respect for the students out there who are truly doing great things, but she also thinks people need to take a step back and see how ridiculous the college admissions process is becoming.
Wit and sarcasm at its best, or just a spoiled teenager looking to blame someone besides herself? You decide.
