In an effort to save money on criminal justice costs, Maryland lawmakers proposed a bill to decriminalize possessing small amounts of marijuana, under 10 grams. This comes after a week where both governor O’Malley and Health Secretary Joshua Sharfstein came out in support of a medical marijuana bill.
Maryland is on the verge of becoming the 18th state to repeal the death penalty; the bill passed the Senate by a 27-20 vote and is expected to pass in the House of Delegates. Meanwhile, 6,695 miles away, 7 men were publicly executed this week in Saudi Arabia by a firing squad. This was a first. Normally convicts who are sentenced to death are traditionally beheaded.
