If you have missed Daniel Day Lewis’ performance in Spielberg’s latest flick, you ought to make it a priority.
Reviews for the film are soaring on Rotten Tomatoes. Spielberg takes you back to the 19th century, in color. There are no extras in this film. Stories going on in the background with unnamed characters, aside from the dialogues in focus.
Not to be overlooked in the Lincoln movie is Sally Fields’performance as the First Lady. She strongly resembles and conveys Mary Todd Lincoln’s sharp-tonged character. The screenplay was written, in part, by the esteemed Doris Kearns Goodwin.
Despite the accolades, movies like “Lincoln” have a way of rubbing history buffs the wrong way. Jon Wiener recently wrote that the film put Lincoln on a biased pedestal, ignoring the roles of slaves who protested against their enslavement and the fact that Lincoln was not dedicated to supporting the 13th Amendment from the get-go.
The film was produced by Kennedies and Kriegers, so politics definitely could have played a role here. But maybe this “enhanced” storyline just made for a better movie.
What do you think? Isa film like “Lincoln” a director’s own art or a bad re-enactment?
