Student loan debt has surpassed $1.2 trillion. Over 40 million Americans have student loan debt. Our UMBC tuition will rise 7% next year. Why is the cost of college spiraling out of control?
But there may be other reasons why college costs are increasing: more administrators in colleges, rapid construction of new school buildings, and increased availability of borrowing funds.
Are you curious to learn more? Join US Democrazy and College Democrats for our screening of Ivory Tower this Thursday at 7:00 pm in UC 115. Afterwards we will hold a discussion about rising tuition costs.
In the meantime, sound off below. Why do you think college costs continue to spiral out of control? Is the NPR story correct--can we attribute the rise in tuition to a decline in public investment? Or do other factors better explain the rise in tuition costs?
