How (Not) to Win the URCAD Selfie Contest
Pro Tips on the Art of the Selfie from UMBC Faculty & Staff
Mr. D. Fick (Undergraduate Research and Upmarket Scholarships) provided us with a fine example of how not to win the URCAD Selfie Contest on April 12, 2023.
"Mr. Fick took a selfie of not himself but of a goose. Or a duck. Or whatever those things are that hang around the pond," said a well-known selfie critic who refused to be identified.
"I was very surprised by the selfie," noted Fick, a longtime UMBC employee and expert file cabinet attendant, who submitted his selfie by electronic mail late last night. "For a split-second, I thought that maybe I had turned into a goose. Or a duck. Or whatever. But I quickly came to my senses and realized that I didn't adjust my camera properly."
"I did look in the mirror though," Fick added after a long silence.
Nevertheless, this is a salient example of how not to take a selfie.
Mr. Fick still has time, however, to submit a second attempt and he could still win one of several fabulous prizes. Here's how:

"While there is technically nothing wrong with Ms. Cowden's selfie, she is masked and seems to have ears and antlers that she does not have in real life," said a well-known selfie critic who refused to be identified.
"I thought it was a good effort," noted Cowden, a longtime UMBC employee and music enthusiast, who submitted her selfie by telefax early this morning. "I'm not sure why I have those fake ears and antlers but people do that, right? They add animal parts? I think it's legal, right?"
Nevertheless, this is a salient example of how not to take a selfie.
Ms. Cowden still has time, however, to submit a second attempt and she could still win one of several fabulous prizes. Here's how:

"That $100 prize is clearly mine," said Michaels, a longtime UMBC employee, who submitted her selfie by fax machine this morning. Unfortunately, Michaels' selfie is somewhat unintelligible- staff members thought it could be a dog, a loaf of bread, a blanket or a combination of all three. This is a salient example of how not to take a selfie.
"No, I took a selfie," said Michaels when questioned. "It's me with my dog sitting on my lap. What's so confusing about that?"
Ms. Michaels still has time, however, to submit a second attempt and she could still win one of several fabulous prizes. Here's how:

"Pretty sure I'm going to win that $100," said Kedzierski, a longtime UMBC employee, who submitted her selfie by mail this morning. Unfortunately, Kedzierski ended up taking a photo of the parking lot outside her office window. This is a salient example of how not to take a selfie.
"Oh," said Kedzierski, when she first set eyes on her selfie attempt. "Must be something wrong with my phone. Probably something in settings. Or maybe I didn't enable cookies. It's always a problem with cookies."
Ms. Kedzierski still has time, however, to submit a second attempt and she could still win one of several fabulous prizes. Here's how:

"Of course, we can't bowl right now," said Miriam, via Zoom. "But we can still send selfies by electronic mail."
"We've always been good at selfies," added Ruth, via Zoom. "I can still put on my bowling shirt, pick up my polished bowling ball and take a mean selfie."
The Club is not presenting any bowling research at URCAD but have perusing the many fascinating student presentations.
"They are doing fantastic work," noted May, via Skype. "Like the kind of work our club does out on those lanes. I'd highly recommend checking out their presentations today just like I'd recommend not trying to beat our crew at bowling. I mean, we have won trophies."

First- you may wish to show yourself in front of your computational device looking at your own presentation (see my example). Or, (and this may very well blow your mind), show yourself looking at a friend in front of their computational device and have them look at your presentation too. YOU ARE BOTH LOOKING AT YOUR OWN PRESENTATION!!! What an incredible time to be alive!
Second- try taking a selfie in front of something that you use in your research. Might be a microscope, a paint brush, or a heap of old suitcases in your basement. Remember- research can be anything.
Once you have mastered these techniques (and I am confident you will), upload your selfie to FaceBook, Instagram and/or Twitter using #umbcURCAD for a chance to win one of four gift cards to the UMBC Bookstore!

"I have a very steady hand, very good camera control," averred Hanebrink, who was interviewed while standing on industrial carpeting featuring a rather vague design. "I'm able to get my camera out of my pocket quite speedily so that I never miss a good shot. Yep, the selfie is right in my wheelhouse."

"I'm at a Whole Nother Level with Selfies!!!"
This is Ms. Ruby Powell of the Semi-Suburban Housing Plant (Area 67). She predicts that she will easily win the URCAD selfie contest.
"A lot of my friends are kind of jealous of me," Ms. Powell admitted. "They think I'm really too good to be taking selfies. That I should move up to another level, you know? Like maybe get a bigger phone and take pictures of mountains and galloping horses and that kind of thing."
