Join an active research team. This work focuses on the factors and conditions that create and maximize success for underrepresented groups in engineering and IT majors and fields. Undergraduate Research Assistant positions are for five hours per week for both fall and spring semester. Unpaid, but may earn academic credit. Research assistants must have at least a 3.0 GPA and possess strong writing skills and the ability to work both independently and as a team member. Must be willing to learn EndNote software and be available to meet with the other members of the research team. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) offers paid research experiences to undergraduate students.  The NIST Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) is looking for students in STEM to join their team for the summer in Gaithersburg, MD.

This is a great way to gain experience in a field of your scientific interest and add to your resume.  Last summer, ten UMBC students were research fellows. Students of all years including graduating seniors may apply to the program.

" Association between Parenting Goals and Parenting Practices among Chinese Immigrants”

Culture plays a significant role in shaping parental values regarding desirable and undesirable long-term socialization goals and child behaviors, as well as optimal parenting practices. However, there is limited research on Chinese American parents’ long-term parenting goals for their children’s development and their parenting practices. Thus, the present study aims to examine: (1) the major themes and the content of the long-term parenting goals for their preschool children reported by immigrant Chinese mothers, (2) mothers’ endorsement of Chinese indigenous parenting practices, (3) and the associations between the parenting goals and parenting practices of these mothers. Seventy immigrant Chinese mothers will be interviewed regarding their long-term socialization goals and asked to complete questionnaires about their parenting practices. The findings from this study will enhance our understanding of how these mothers achieve their long-term socialization goals for their children in the U.S. and contribute to our promotion of the successful development of these families.
