The Nebraska Summer Research Program is a consortium of NSF funded Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) and other summer research opportunities programs (SROP).

All work and no play?
Not exactly.

One unique feature of the Nebraska Summer Research Program is the partnership between the REU and SROP programs and the Office of Graduate Studies. Students benefit in having a community of scholars in which to learn and to share research with.

This intensive summer research experience provides mentoring and research experiences while allowing scholars to preview graduate school life. Students with a strong interest in graduate programs are particularly encouraged to apply, as are those from populations traditionally underrepresented in graduate education.

The College of Engineering is offering to qualified undergraduates from throughout the country the opportunity to conduct research projects in:

• Computer Science
• Computer Engineering
• Electrical Engineering
• Engineering Technology
• Materials Science and Engineering

The program lasts for eight weeks during the summer. The dates for 2012 are June 2nd (check-in) to July 28th (check out).

Research Opportunities

All research projects pertaining to SUPER will be based in Discovery Park, just four miles north of the main campus.

SUPER students will have office space in Discovery Park and access to all research facilities. They will be assigned a faculty mentor and can choose to perform research under one of our research areas or propose a research project of their own (check our website for other exciting research projects):

• Bioinformatics
• Characterization and testing of piezoelectric materials and devices
• Computer architecture, memory systems, and parallel processing
• Development and testing of advanced polymer based materials and composites
• Embedded Computing
• Low Power VLSI Design
• Microwave and Antennas

Eligibility

Our program is oriented towards students who have completed at least two years of study in:

• Computer Science
• Computer Engineering
• Electrical Engineering
• Mechanical Engineering
• Materials Science and Engineering

A cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher at the end of the Fall 2011 semester is required.  Students who will graduate at the end of the Spring 2012 semester are not eligible for this program.

The STAR Program is funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) #5R25 HL103180-02.  Basic overview …

• Each STAR participant must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident who has completed one college level mathematics and one college level science series (Freshman level); with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.  **Preferred candidates for positions will also have 2 or 3 quarters, mentored experience in a biomedical/biobehavioral laboratory.

• According to each individual’s background, laboratory participants will receive a mentored laboratory experience

• Each participant will receive up to $5500 for the summer experience (paid in installments), round-trip travel funds are available to out-of- area students, who meet criteria

• Program dates are either:   

1.  June 18 through August 17, 2012:  Semester system school

           2.  June 18 through September 7, 2012:  Quarter system school

EACH SUMMER, the Maryland Sea Grant Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program offers fourteen students the opportunity to conduct marine research on the Chesapeake Bay — the program is especially designed for students majoring in such fields as biology, chemistry, ecology, environmental science, engineering, physics, marine science and mathematics.

The Maryland Sea Grant Program, with support from the National Science Foundation provides each fellow with:

• a stipend of $4,300
• dormitory costs
• round-trip travel expenses

During this 12-week REU program each student works with a mentor on an individual research project at one of two labs located on the Chesapeake Bay: the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science's (UMCES) Chesapeake Biological Laboratory in Solomons, Maryland, or its Horn Point Laboratory in Cambridge, Maryland.
