Researcher of the Week: Oleg Makarevich

<Tagline>Undergraduate researchers explore their interests!</Tagline>

Meet Oleg,

He is a Biological Sciences major and a two-time URA Scholar. In his spare time he offers his services as a tutor at the Chemistry Tutorial Center. His future pursuits includes obtaining an MD/PhD and conduct research while being a specialist and continuing to see patients.

How did you find your mentor for year research project?

I had applied to quite a few different summer programs across the country and did not get in, so I talked with Dr. Lindahl of the UMBC Biology Department, and he was willing to accept me as a summer intern (summer 2012).

How did you know this was the project you wanted to do?

Honestly, at the time I applied, I did not know much about how research was conducted. I was more concerned with finding a way to get my foot in the door and to learn the methods necessary than about my project. In the end, I enjoyed it and have continued working on the project I started last fall.

Is this your first independent research project?

Yes, this is my first independent research project.

Do you get course credit for this work?

I do get course credit for this work (1 credit).

How much time do you put into it?

It really depends on the week, but on average I would say about 10-15 hours per week.

How did you hear about the Undergraduate Research Award (URA) program?

My mentor had mentioned it to me, and I looked it up and thought it would be great to have my project funded.

What academic background did you have before you applied for the URA?

I was a sophomore Biochemistry major at the time, so I was taking Organic Chemistry and Genetics. I had a solid foundation from high school and was able to not only complete my coursework but reach beyond and conduct research.

Was the application difficult to do?

No, the application was quite easy.

How much did your mentor help you with the application?

My mentor helped me significantly with editing and tailoring my abstract (and the scope of my project).

What has been the hardest part about your research?

The hardest part is always the failures. Especially in biology research when sometimes it takes a week or two to complete an experiment. Starting over, especially when you do not know what went wrong and have to troubleshoot can be painful. However, the rewarding feeling of accomplishment when that experiment finally works is incredible.

What was the most unexpected thing?

The most unexpected thing was the relaxed atmosphere in my lab. I always imagined a lab was a place with lots of people with white coats and masks who worked on a clock and didn't talk much. I was so wrong! In reality, a lab is filled with regular people who just happen to also be passionate about science and research.

How does your research relate to your work in other classes?

There have been quite a few times when I was sitting in class and could barely contain my excitement because I was "learning" exactly what I had already done in lab that week.

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?

Find something that you can be passionate about. Something that you'd be willing to read a long, difficult paper about. And then pursue it with all you have. Find what's worth that kind of effort.

Read his abstract here...

Amgen-UROP Scholars Program

<Tagline>Massachusetts Institute of Technology</Tagline>

Entering its ninth year, the Amgen-UROP Scholars Program invites undergraduates to participate in faculty-mentored summer research at MIT in the science and biotechnology areas.

Students admitted to this program (known as "Amgen Scholars") will have opportunities to conduct research, analyze data, present research results, network with other undergraduates with similar research interests, and develop working relationships with MIT faculty mentors and other research staff.

Participation has many benefits. Amgen Scholars learn how to collaborate effectively in research settings while investigating areas of research interest within a specific discipline and gaining practical skills and knowledge for both graduate study and post-graduation careers. Participants become fully integrated in MIT's summer research community, interacting with faculty mentors and fellow undergraduates while participating in research seminars and other networking events. Most importantly, Amgen Scholars become involved in exciting research and contribute to the advancement of science in an area of interest.

The Program also offers a competitive compensation package. Amgen Scholars working 40 hours per week for the nine week period will earn $4,320, based on an hourly wage of $12.00. Housing in a designated MIT residence hall and a $800 food allowance will also be provided.

Space in the the Amgen-UROP Scholars Program is limited; up to 20 undergraduates will be admitted for Summer 2015.

Researcher of the Week: Amber Barnett

<Tagline>Undergraduate researchers explore their interests!</Tagline>

Meet Amber,
She is an Ancient Studies major and an URA Scholar. She is currently a student assistant in the Ancient studies office and a LRC tutor concentrating on the subject of Ancient Greek. She is also a member of Catholic Retrievers’ Music Ministry and occasionally assists the Ancient Studies Student Council.

How did you find your mentor for your research?

I was poking around on the website for my major, and saw the opportunity for an honors Ancient Studies degree. It involved writing a thesis, and my advisor recommended my mentor.

How did you know this was the project you wanted to do?

Before I researched a thesis, I had to read a whole selection of works. That selection included various ancient Greek tragedies, and the subject just seemed interesting.

Is this your first independent research project?

I did URCAD this year, so no.

Do you get course credit for this work?

Yes, the reading selection I did first counted as a course. The thesis writing also counts as a course.

How much time do you put into it?

It is a big investment. Most of my weekends go into my research (and so does any spare time I have during the week-days).

How did you hear about the Undergraduate Research Award (URA) program?

My mentor suggested it.

What academic background did you have before you applied for the URA?

I had (and maintain) a 4.0 GPA in my major, and have taken more classes that pertain to my research.

Was the application difficult to do?

Yes, it was difficult. It’s important for the application to look just right, and it took a very long time and a lot of effort.

How much did your mentor help you with the application?

My mentor was crucial in helping me with the application. He would proofread my work and make suggestions to make it better.

What has been the hardest part about your research?

The hardest part is finding time to work on it and managing to compose my thoughts.

What was the most unexpected thing?

Managing to find connections between Hecuba and Clytemnestra was surprising, so I guess the most unexpected thing was actually some of the results.

How does your research relate to your work in other classes?

My research is on Athenian Greek tragedy in the 5th century BC, and—as an Ancient Studies major—this period of time is part of what I learn about.

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?

Start early, and make sure you’re interested in what you’re researching.

What are your career goals?

I hope to be a teacher someday and lay missionary.

Read her abstract here...
