Research in Optics Program
"Study light with the Rio REU Program!"
The College of Optical Sciences is looking for undergraduate students who are interested in a 10-week summer program in optical sciences research. These innovative projects touch on "virtually every field of science and industry"! Students pick will be in one of several research programs: - Midspacial Frequency Optical Surface Error Control
- Creating, Manipulating and Imaging Complex Quantum States in a Single Atom
- XUV Frequency Combs for Precision Spectroscopy
- Fabrication and Testing of Freeform Optics
- Ultrafast Mode-Locked Semiconductor Disk Lasers
- 3-D Vector Maxwell Simulations on the Nanoscale
- Metal Oxide Thin Film for UV Protection of Polymer Optical Filler
- Development of V-Lab Module: Virtual 3-D Optical Ray Aberration Visualizer
- Optical Coherence Tomography Imaging of Fallopian Tube
- Freeform Optics for Lighting
Students will receive a stipend of $5,000.
The deadline is February 26 and acceptance letters will be sent in early March. If interested, see the website for more details.

- Travel and housing at the Shannon Point Marine Center

Position: Research Assistantship
Positions Available: 1-2
Duties: To provide research support for Dr. King-Meadows.
Main Job Tasks and Responsibilities: data entry; finding assigned
journal articles, newspaper articles, and books; preparing typed
summaries of journal articles, newspaper articles, and books; running
errands to AOK library and to other units on campus; photocopying,
scanning and faxing, sending emails, preparing outgoing mail; typing
documents; making phone calls; compiling documents and correspondence;
attendance at weekly project meetings and participation in library
research training; preparation and submission of final research report
on activities; work on special projects and perform other duties as
assigned.
Required skills: Research skill would be helpful, but will
train. Ability to work independently on assigned tasks, familiar with
Excel and Microsoft Word. General office experience required. Key
Competencies include organizing and planning, prioritizing, attention to
detail and accuracy, problem-solving, adaptability, teamwork, and
written and oral communication skills.
Duration: 11 weeks
Hours per week: 8
Pay range: $8.50
Supervisor: Dr. Tyson King-Meadows

Spend your Summer 2016 in Tallahassee, Florida
Retaining Engineers Through Research Entrepreneurship and Advanced-materials Training (RETREAT)
The High-Performance Materials Institute (HPMI) at the Florida State University is hosting a summer training program in Nanomaterials and Processing Engineering. The Diversity in Research and Engineering of Advanced Materials (DREAM) Training program, sponsored by the Air Force Research Lab Munitions Directorate (AFRL RW) at Eglin Air Force Base, will provide provide undergraduate and GRADUATE U.S. citizens from the under-represented groups in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) disciplines, the opportunity to enhance their research experience in Science and Engineering.
The selected participants will work on research projects requested by the AFRL RW. These projects will include research on nanomaterials, multiscale composite fabrication, and developmental work on intrinsic structural health monitoring through triboluminescence.
The 10-week program is scheduled for May 30th - August 5th, 2016 at the Materials Research Building in Tallahassee Florida!
Stipends (which include a travel allowance), and lodging, will be provided to the selected interns.
Applications are now being accepted!
Eligibility:
- US citizenship or permanent residents
- This program is open only to African-Americans
- Selection will be based on academic performance and faculty recommendation
- Tentative dates: May 30th - August 5th, 2016

The Center for Imaging Science at Rochester Institute of Technology is now accepting applications for their Summer 2016 research program!
There will be a stipend of $500/week for the 10 week program, and housing will be given on the RIT campus (if required).
Program Date: June 6th-August 12th, 2016
Students will:
- Conduct a research project in a lab
- Be given research development experiences on writing paper, presentations, and more.
- Have the opportunity to present their research at a national conference
- Interact with the research community of the Center for Imaging Science
