International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) An international competition in biology and genetics
Are you interested in participating in an international competition surrounding new innovation in synthetic biology and genetic engineering?

International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) is an international competition for students interested in:
  • Synthetic biology
  • Biotechnology
  • Interdisciplinary collaboration (Yes English and Computer Science majors are welcome!!)
iGEM runs three main programs:
  • iGEM Competition - an international competition for students interested in the field of synthetic biology
  • Labs Program - a program for academic labs to use the same resources as the competition teams
  • Registry of Standard Biological Parts - a growing collection of genetic parts use for building biological devices and systems.

The iGEM team at UMBC has participated in the competition before and traveled to Boston and won the Bronze prize!

He is an American Studies and Political Science major as well as a McNair scholar. His career goal is to become an academic and an editorial writer. Prior to his research, he was more interested in policy than discourse analysis. Now, he would like to eventually write books on different types of discourse within America, particularly of a political nature or relating to African-American issues.

Richard's research will explore the cultural and linguistic approach that was used to analyze the effect that speeches by members of the right-wing Tea Party Caucus have had on conservative political discourse. The rhetoric of these politicians after their ascendance in the 2010 congressional elections was compared to the rhetoric used by John McCain, the Republican nominee in 2008, and Donald Drumpf, the Republican nominee in 2016 and current POTUS. This analysis could explain the mind set of the oval office.

From 2001-2015, we hosted participants from across the country who spent ten weeks in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry and Liquid Crystal Institute research laboratories. Students in our program work closely with the faculty and other researchers on exciting projects in the areas of liquid crystals, materials (biomaterials & nanomaterials) and biological membranes.

In addition to working in the lab, participants of the REU program are also given the opportunity to take part in a number of social events, ranging from sporting and cultural events to canoe trips.

RESEARCH CONCENTRATIONS:
  • Liquid Crystals
  • Materials Science
  • Nanomaterials
  • Biomaterials
  • Biomembrances
The program runs from June 5 - August 11, 2017 
The deadline to apply is MARCH 1

Benefits include:

Undergraduate Research Awards provide up to $1,500 to undergraduate students to support their research or creative work with a UMBC faculty mentor on an original project. UMBC students of all years and disciplines are invited to apply, as long as they will remain enrolled at UMBC long enough to compete the proposed work.

Eligible students are degree-seeking undergraduates who will conduct mentored-research June 2017- May 2018. The URA may be used to support work being done as part of a capstone project, honors thesis, ongoing lab, scholars program, or independent project.

The Lake Erie Center is an interdisciplinary research, education and outreach facility dedicated to solving environmental problems in the Great Lakes. Students are partnered with scientists, engineers, graduate students, and agency professionals to conduct cutting-edge research on important land-lake environmental challenges. Students will experience fun, exciting, and meaningful field and lab research that will help them to build the skills for their dream career. Students will also have the opportunity to develop life-long connections with top scientists, faculty, other students, and more.

The program plans to help students accomplish the following:
  • Study and help combat environmental problems:
    •      Harmful Algal Blooms       
    •      Climate Change
    •      Invasive Species               
    •      Water Quality
  • Use & Apply Top Technology: Sensor networks, water quality, environmental DNA, next-gen sequencing, Geographic Information Systems, ROVs, drones, etc.
*Opportunities to earn research credits are available

The program runs from May 30 - July 28, 2017
The deadline to apply is FEBRUARY 24, 2017

Bioinspired robots—defined as robots that are inspired by natural systems such as insects, birds, mammals, and reptiles—have the potential to significantly enable or enhance capabilities in manufacturing, health care, reconnaissance, exploration, food safety, and search and rescue. Because of their unique design, bioinspired robotics offer a truly interdisciplinary systems research challenge that encompasses biology, materials, mechanical design, control, sensors and actuators, power, electronics, and computer science among other topics. 

Program Goals
The Bioinspired Robotics REU Site aims to:
  • Teach students about bioinspired robotics and the applicable technologies and applications
  • Engage talented and diverse students in interdisciplinary research programs
  • Prepare students for graduate school or research jobs in industry and labs
  • Introduce undergraduates to team-based interdisciplinary research
  • Build a strong community between undergraduates, graduate student mentors, and faculty
During the 10-week summer program, students will develop research projects, attend technical tutorial seminars, visit local government labs involved in bioinspired robotics research, attend professional and academic development seminars, and tour Maryland’s top-notch facilities supporting robotics research including the UMd FabLab and Neutral Bouyancy Research Facility. Lunch discussions will provide an informal setting for students and mentors to discuss technical and non-technical topics. The program culminates in student presentations on their summer research.

The program will run from June 5 through August 11, 2017
The deadline to apply is FEBRUARY 17, 2017 

Benefits include:
  • a $5,000 stipend for their summer work and funding is available for on-campus housing and travel support.

  • Mechanical Engineering,

Participants in the program will conduct research and take part in group activities including seminars on cutting-edge areas of materials physics; workshops focusing on graduate programs, career opportunities in the physical sciences and engineering, and scientific communications skills; and field trips to laboratories on and off campus. Experience carrying out scientific research is not a prerequisite for admission to the program. However, prior experience may be a considerable asset for some of the REU research projects offered each summer.

What is Community-Driven Research Day?
Community-Driven Research Day provides an opportunity for community-based organizations and city agencies to have a greater role in the research process, by elevating their needs and identifying activities that would benefit from the support of researchers. This event helps match the skills of the local research community with community-defined research needs.

This year, Community-Driven Research Day will focus on five areas related to public health:
    •  Addiction and Overdose
    •  Environmental Challenges
    •  Obesity and the Food System
    •  Risks to Adolescent Health
    •  Violence

How does Community-Driven Research Day work?
Community projects selected to participate will each have a table to display information about their organization, projects, and research priorities. In “speed dating”-style, interested researchers will rotate throughout the room at prescribed times to learn more about organizations in their interest area and see if there are mutually beneficial opportunities for collaborating. Attendees will also have the opportunity to discuss collaborations during the networking session. Light refreshments will be served.

Funding Opportunity
The UHI will provide funds to community-university collaborations that result from participating in Community-Driven Research Day.

This is a great opportunity for students, faculty, community-based organizations, and city agencies, who would like to network and share their research with the community. If you have a research project that's related to one of the five categories or you have another great project, please apply to present.
