Moderator: Denise Meringolo (History).
Participants: Nicole King (American Studies), Steve Bradley (Visual Arts), Bill Shewbridge (Media & Communication Studies), Michelle Stefano (Maryland Traditions & American Studies), Deborah Rudacille (English), Eddie Bartee, Jr. (former Sparrows Point steelworker), Troy Pritt (former Sparrows Point steelworker), and Jason Reed
(community gardener, Curtis Bay).
Industry has shaped the lives of millions in the US.
Numerous communities, including company towns, have been built in and around
mills, plants, and manufacturing centers on every coast and in between.
Nonetheless, in this age of sharp industrial decline, what happens to these
communities and places that were once thriving? The forum brings together
researchers and community members from the deindustrialized areas of Sparrows
Point Steel Mill (Dundalk) and Brooklyn/Curtis Bay to problematize the "post"
in post-industrialization, and discuss the relationships between people and
place and their memories and stories of livelihoods long gone.
