Hi all,

As if being a student is not a hard enough job, we have the unique challenge of doing it while we are raising our kids; however, it makes it hard to find people that we connect with. With that in mind, I am creating a club just for us, a Parent's club here at UMBC.

How cool would it be to connect with other parents at UMBC? To have a group of people that are going through the same thing as us?

In addition, we will have fun events and hopefully some great outreach programs to encourage and support other parents who want to go to college.

This club will be a great way to meet other people, and help each other out, all while having some fun. Please let me know if you are interested in joining, I need to have at least five people in order to proceed with the next step in the application process. Thanks for reading and hope to hear from you soon!!

Whitnee McGowan
mcgow1@umbc.edu

Safe Sleep Education Study for Moms

FYI!

***************************************************

Hello,

I am a doctoral candidate at UMBC in the Psychology Dept. and wanted to contact you about a study that I am conducting that is a part of my dissertation. I'm looking to speak to parents of young children and any expectant parents. As your organization provides so many great services to mothers on campus, I thought I'd reach out to you to see if I could possibly come to speak to any mothers who attend your center.

What I am looking to do is show the parents or any expectant parents a 10-min video I created about safe sleep and tummy time recommendations for infants. I am trying to determine if the video is an effective educational tool and what the parents think about the video. I would have the parents complete a "test" before the video and then another one after the video to see if the video improves their knowledge about safe sleep and tummy time. I would need about 45 minutes with the moms.

I also have funding to provide all participants with a $10 gift card to Target and some light refreshments.

Please let me know if it would be possible to come speak to any mothers or expectant mothers, and if you have any questions. Thank you so much for your time. I look forward to hearing from you!

Amber
973-670-9464

Amber Mendres-Smith, M.A., BCBA, LBA
University of Maryland, Baltimore County
Department of Psychology

1000 Hilltop Circle

Baltimore, MD 21250

Office: Sondheim 411

We have found that student-parents face unique challenges. We see an opportunity at UMBC to develop ways that will make their UMBC experience more rewarding, to help them feel included and to provide them with resources that may be lacking. In order to do this we need to collect information from student parents like yourself. If you are receiving this e-mail you have been referred to us as someone who can help us develop our project!
Flexible part-time schedule at UMBC's Y Preschool

<Tagline>Share your needs and concerns!</Tagline>

FYI! I received this email via the GWST list-serv and I'm helping spread the word!

If you or someone you know at UMBC is needing a more flexible schedule at the Y Preschool on campus, here's your chance to have your voice be heard!

See below for more details. Thanks to Orianne Smith for taking the lead on this important advocacy work!

-Jess

************************

Dear all,

My name is Orianne Smith and I am the Chair of English and the Chair of Faculty Affairs. I'm reaching out to those of you who are thinking about starting a family or those of you who already have young children. I'm also reaching out to others who are invested in creating and sustaining a family-friendly environment at UMBC.

As many of us know, the Y UMBC childcare facility opened its doors again this fall. I can attest that the Y UMBC is a wonderful option to consider for children ages 2-4: my daughter attended several years ago until the facility closed because of mold issues. The Y UMBC worked perfectly for me back then because I asked for--and was given--a flexible part-time schedule of T-W-Th. Unfortunately, this flexibility is no longer an option at the new facility. The Y has made a change in policy that prevents faculty members from choosing a schedule that works best for them and their families. Currently, the facility will only consider a M-W-F schedule or a T-Th schedule. This does not address the needs of most faculty who do not have a five day a week, 9 - 5 schedule. I would say the same would be true for students.

In my capacity as Chair of Faculty Affairs I met with Valerie Thomas this week to discuss this issue. She said that the Y might consider going back to allowing UMBC parents to choose a schedule that suits their needs if there is enough interest.

Please contact HR at 410-455-6830 or via email at preschool@umbc.edu if you are personally interested in a flexible part-time schedule for childcare or if you simply want to support this opportunity for our UMBC community. If you are considering the Y for your child then let them know your preferred schedule and preferred start date.

Thanks,

Orianne

Orianne Smith
Associate Professor and Chair, English
Affiliate Associate Professor, Gender + Women's Studies
University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC)

Both of my children have attended this day care since they were a few months old and I have been very happy with the care and education that they have received here. Several of the children "graduated" to elementary school this fall so there are a few openings.

Feel free to contact me with questions about being an Active Kidz parent at gadsby@umbc.edu.

Please contact Veck Tamayo directly at Active Kidz to inquire further about applying for an opening.
