On Nov. 2 UMBC’s Donald F. Norris (Public Policy) served as on-air political analyst for WBAL and Roy T. Meyers (Political Science) covered the election on WYPR with Fraser Smith. This culminated a busy election season with both new and familiar UMBC names in the press.
Norris—chairman of the UMBC Department of Public Policy, who closely follows Maryland state and local government and politics—commented on the governor’s race and Maryland’s political climate for the Baltimore Sun (1/2/3/4), Washington Post (1/2), Washington Examiner (1/2), AP, WBAL, WJZ, the Gazette , Patch.com and CNS.
Meyers, a former Congressional Budget Office analyst, appeared in the segment “Looking Back at Maryland’s Fiscal Future?” on Maryland Morning with WYPR’s Sheilah Kast and commented on the fiscal health of Baltimore County in the Baltimore Sun. Laura Hussey (Political Science), who focuses on public opinion on policy issues and the roles of government agencies, provided insight for the Baltimore Sun, Maryland Public Television, Washington Examiner, Catonsville Times and CNS (1/2).
Thomas F. Schaller (Political Science)—an expert on the American presidency, US Congress, interest groups, lobbying, campaigns and elections—has produced a series of Baltimore Sun columns on election issues (1/2) and was recently quoted by the Washington Post (1/2), Washington Times and Washington Examiner. In previous elections his analysis has appeared in the New York Times, LA Times, American Prospect, Politico, Salon, The New Republic, on NPR and The Colbert Report.
UMBC students have also been in the spotlight this election, beginning with freshman Sondheim Scholar David H. Murray, running for a seat on the Prince George’s County Board of Education. Murray received endorsements from the Washington Post, ASASP (representing school principals), Metro Washington AFL-CIO, SEIU (representing school custodians) and several leaders from the board of education, state legislature and county council. On Oct. 29 he was profiled in the Washington Post and on Nov. 2 he was featured, along with another young candidate, on NBC Washington news. On Nov. 3 the Gazette reported that Murray was edged out by incumbent Rosalind Johnson in a very close race—at 8:00 am, with 90.6% of votes counted, the two were separated by just 411 votes.
Two other UMBC students were highlighted in national coverage of voters at the polls: Sarah Kuznear in the LA Times and Kamran Sarwar in the Washington Post.
UMBC’s on-campus debate between Baltimore County Executive candidates Kevin Kamenetz and Ken Holt on Oct. 12 (watch video) was covered in the Baltimore Sun, Arbutus Times, Patch.com, on WBAL and WJZ.
