Top Five Reasons to Hang With Hillel!

<Tagline>Voices of UMBC Hillel</Tagline>

Written by Elizabeth Pastwa (Hillel Student Organization Co-President)

UMBC Hillel has a lot to offer – here are the top five reasons to come hang with Hillel!

5. Free Food
Let’s be honest, if you’re in college then this is one of your top priorities. And between Aliza Silverman, our Hillel Engagement Associate and "hired Jewish mother", there is plenty of free food, both at our free weekly Shabbat dinners and the rest of the week! The office is always stocked with snacks, and students can make requests. Beyond these options, there are opportunities to get lunch with Hillel staff and leadership, so you can get food and company!

Image Description: A variety of hamantashen set out on a table in Commons, ready to be handed out to passer-by!

4. Variety

UMBC Hillel hosts a variety of different events throughout the semester, and we'd love to work with you to create the events you want to us! Examples include costume Shabbat, game night, and movie with discussion. Let us know what you’re interested in and we can work with you to make it happen! Contact Aliza, Rabbi Jeremy, or the student leadership with your ideas.

Image Description: Students in the Interfaith Center Multipurpose Room. Two circles of students are playing card games, and one group of students is playing connect four with a large set.

3. Being There For Each Other

Sure, this sounds generic, but hear me out! Whether it’s sitting in the office and sharing TikToks, or venting in the Hillel community WhatsApp about annoyances from your week. you’ll find a group of people that take the word “community” seriously. We don’t just want Hillel to be a club, we want you to be a part of our family! During your time at UMBC, however short or long, we want to help create the community you want to see. That includes being there to meet you at whatever level you want or need. Whether you just come to Shabbat or you’re at every event, we’ll be happy to see you!

2. The Rabbi

The meme. The myth. The legend. Spend enough time with Hillel and you’ll understand why the UMBC Hillel Rabbi, Jeremy Fierstein has

a reputation for his humor and great leadership. Whether you go to him for something serious or something silly, he’ll hear you out and is will do what he can to help you. Jeremy is a friendly face at UMBC, and he (as well as the student leadership) will do what they can to

make sure you feel welcome!

Imagine Description: Rabbi Jeremy, Aliza, and recent alum Ryan standing outside of the University Center.

1. No Judgement

UMBC Hillel is a no-judgement zone, with zero toleration for bigotry. Feel free to be yourself and to explore your identity as you explore college and the experiences that come with it! We want you to feel welcome, but more than that we want you to be yourself. After all, no one else is going to be you!

Looking to get involved in Hillel? We are holding an information session for incoming students and parents on Tuesday, June 30th from 4–5 PM; sign up today!
Please Stop Casting Blame for Covid19

<Tagline>Voices of UMBC Hillel</Tagline>

We don't know exactly how HaShem (God) works. Perhaps we know certain things (Middah Kneged Midah-Measure for Measure etc), but to say for certain that covid19 is because of a particular sin is poppycock. In the words of my Rav (Rabbi), Rabbi Simcha Shafran ztzl

(may his righteous memory be for a blessing), on a different topic, "Those who know don't say and those who say don't know." That doesn't mean that one shouldn't be doing some soul searching during a pandemic! It's certainly not a bad idea to take this time to reflect and perhaps find one or more areas of our spirituality or even character that could use some work. But for somebody to blame the whole pandemic on the actions of the world is wrong, fear-mongering, and really just shows by them saying anything-how little they actually know. We can't know why there is a covid19. What we do know is that it could never hurt to work on ourselves which of course would help us find more favor in God's "eyes." But to say definitively why we have a pandemic, and even worse to blame other people for it...no, just no.

So please, enough with the "cute" gematrios (numerical value calculations) and drashos (lit. Discourses/ in this case- personal elucidations of Judaic texts) about why it's happening. If you have a personal middah (trait) that you feel you need to work on - of course, do so. But please, do not project your self-guilt for your own sins onto others.

B'eizer HaShem (with God’s help), not only should we see the geula sheleima bimheira (final redemption quickly), but in the meantime, may we also see the geula (redemption) from this magaifa (pandemic) as well- bimheira (quickly), without ysorim (sufferings) and without

choloyim raim (bad illnesses).

For all of those who need a refua sheleima (full recovery) from anything, may they have a refuah sheleima bimheira (full recovery quickly).

Written by Yehuda Leventhal

<Tagline>A Hasidic take on Counting the Omer</Tagline>

Question: Why are we obligated to count the Omer (the period of time between Passover and the next holiday Shavuot, the festival of first fruits) if Israel had already merited the redemption from Egypt?

What does the wise child say? “What are these testimonies, statutes and judgements that Y-H-W-H our God has commanded you?” [Deuteronomy 6:20]. Answer him according to all the practices of Passover, including “One does not maftirin (conclude) the Pesach meal with the afikomen (half of the middle matzah).”

- The Haggadah

In the siddur (prayer book) of Rabbi Isaac Luria it is taught that the word pesach means “skipping,” which refers to the fact that Israel at the Exodus achieved gadlut (complete enlightenment) by pesach = skipping over the 49 earlier stages of development and thus merited the reward of freedom from bondage.

According to R. Avraham, the son of the Maggid R. Dov Baer, a person needs to develop all seven of their main qualities, and should begin with honing love, awe and glory. Each, in and of itself should be turned toward the service of God so that we do not make use of these attributes for our own bodily benefit but for the sake of God. Each of the 7 main qualities contain all seven others within it, thus adding up to forty-nine. Only after all are honed are we able to open the fiftieth gate, Binah (complete enlightenment) and achieve enlightenment.

At the Exodus from Egypt (a.k.a. Mitzrayim), the Israelites did not pass GO nor did they collect $200, rather they skipped immediately to the fiftieth gate. Thus scripture says, “Israel came forth from Egypt, hamushim” (Exodus 13:18), which here will be translated as fifty fold, though normally translated as armed for battle, which teaches us they had reached the fiftieth gate of development and achieved enlightenment thus being rewarded with the Exodus. It was through binah (complete enlightenment)that the miracle of redemption took place and immediately afterwards this enlightenment was lost. Due to this loss they were then commanded to count out the forty nine days of the Omer leading up to the holiday of Shavuot in order to be invited to experience Divine revelation and receive the 10 Commandments.

This is the meaning of the wise child’s question, “What are these testimonials, statutes and judgements…” Ideally, on the holiday of Pesach/Passover we personally experience the Exodus as if we are leaving Egypt and thus are also in the state of gadlut (complete enlightenment). From that vantage point we too should question, and even object to the idea of statues and commandments as they interfere with our ability to act as enlightened human beings. But we are not actually in a state of gadlut (complete enlightenment), rather we are still in our own version of Mitzrayim (dire straits) and need to work through the 49 stages of development towards personal enlightenment.

May we all merit to become as enlightened as the wise child to view the world from their vantage point. May the plagues be lifted from our house and may all who need come and eat.

Posted by: Rabbi Jeremy

Source:

Speaking Torah: Spiritual Teachings from around the Maggid’s Table Vol.2

Authors: Arthur Green, Ebn Leader, Or Rose and Ariel Evan Mayse

(Pesach, pages 211-212)

Inspired by a text from the book titled, “Peri Hayyim” - Rabbi Abraham Hayyim Ben Gedaliah, 1873
