Happy Eclipse Monday! Our weekly meetings continue tonight, from 7:10 PM to 9:00 PM in ITE 231. You can also join us virtually on Webex: https://umbc.webex.com/meet/CyberDawgs. 

Tonight, we will have a guest speaker presenting about "Game Hacking". This will be great opportunity to learn about vulnerability research and hardware/software exploitation, all in the name of cheating at video games. (Video games you have authorization to cheat on, Don’t Do Crime.) So, if you’re looking at a fun way to learn about important topics in cybersecurity, you don’t want to miss topic.

As a reminder, this week's submissions for the CyberPaws CTF challenge will close at the start of tonight's meeting. Remember to submit your flag! Also, if you would like a hint, you can DM a board member to receive one.

A critical voicemail notification illuminates your phone's screen. It's from your supervisor. You know this must be important; they rarely use voicemails.  Your fingers tremble slightly as you press play.

The message that follows is a series of distorted sounds, a cryptic sequence that seems nonsensical. However, your supervisor's final words echo clearly: Promotion to the first person who deciphers the message.

This is your chance to prove your analytical skills and dedication.  Can you crack the code and unlock your potential within the company? Utilize your critical thinking and research abilities to unravel the hidden message before your colleagues.

CYBER MOVIE NIGHT

With the halfway point of the semester being passed, the board wanted to offer everyone a meeting where they could relax, enjoy a movie, and get some free food and drinks!

That’s right—tonight is a Cyber Movie Night! We will be showing WarGames. The movie will be in Commons 331, so please do NOT go to ITE 231. We will start the movie at 7:10 PM, so make sure you arrive early (anytime after 6:45 PM) to grab a seat and food. No Webex tonight, for legal reasons.

Free Food and Drinks?
Yes, there will be pizza, drinks (soda/water), popcorn, and candy!

WarGames (1983)
High school student David Lightman (Matthew Broderick) unwittingly hacks into a military supercomputer while searching for new video games. After starting a game of Global Thermonuclear War, Lightman leads the supercomputer to activate the nation's nuclear arsenal in response to his simulated threat as the Soviet Union. Once the clueless hacker comes to his senses, Lightman, with help from his girlfriend (Ally Sheedy), must find a way to alert the authorities to stop the onset of World War III.

Tonight's Meeting will be IN-PERSON ONLY

Our weekly meetings continue tonight, from 7:10 PM to 9:00 PM in ITE 231. Unfortunately, we will not be able to provide a virtual component tonight.

Due to tonight's topic, it is critcal that slides are not disseminated in any form publicly. Since Webex poses a high risk of third parties recording/sharing the slides, it was decided the meeting would be in-person only. 

This week, we will have a Computer Network Operator guest speaker. They will be presenting on Metasploit, a powerful open-source framework widely used for vulnerability research, exploit development, and security testing. This is great opportunity to learn from a professional in the field about a prevalent penetration tool and to gain a deeper understanding of security vulnerabilities. We look forward to seeing everyone tonight!

Challenge Name: Hash and Dash

You've stumbled upon "Hash and Dash," a seemingly innocent breakfast joint boasting "the world's greasiest hash browns." Our intel suggests it's actually a front for the notorious "Morning Mayhem" criminal organization - yes, they're bad, but also, apparently, not very creative.

Our sources believe they launder money through Hash and Dash's online ordering system. Genius, right? Here's the kicker: you've intercepted a message hinting at their next heist, and it's going down faster than a plate of hot hash browns.

You need to infiltrate their system ASAP! Those greasy hash browns might be a delicious cover, but their login page is the real key. Crack the password, and grab whatever incriminating evidence you can find before they pull off another breakfast-themed crime spree!

Remember, the fate of a perfectly balanced breakfast (and the world, probably) rests on your shoulders. Now get cracking!

(Note: Do NOT abuse the server. Bruteforcing should NOT be used to solve this challenge. You can/will crash the server and ruin the experience for everyone.)

Hey CyberDawgs!

New week, new meeting! Our weekly meetings continue tonight, from 7:10 PM to 9:00 PM in ITE 231. You can also join us virtually on Webex: https://umbc.webex.com/meet/CyberDawgs. 

This week, we will be discussing the OWASP Foundation, in particular their "Top 10" for web application security. We will discussing what the OWASP Foundation is, the risks on their "Top 10" list, the relevance of the list in 2024, how different exploits work, how to patch/prevent exploitation, and finally demonstrations of the exploits themselves. Regardless of your current knowledge, tonight will be a great opportunity to learn about the importance of web security and how to defend your future projects. We look forward to seeing everyone tonight!

Your longtime employment on your company's incident investigation team is usually quiet. However, that is all about to change. An employee has contacted the team about a "mysterious file" they received in an email attachment.

You and your team immediately become suspicious of the file and believe it might be malware. Furthermore, your boss is pressuring you all to provide answers ASAP. It's critical that you import your knowledge and get to the bottom of this. Best of luck, and hopefully, you can find this file's true functions.

The password for the zip file is "infected"

(Note: The file is not actually "malware". You can pretend you're running it in a safe environment.)
