Join us at HackUMBC’s Innovate Good, a 24-hour student Hackathon on Saturday and Sunday April 29th- 30th, 2017.  Innovate Good is themed for creating software or hardware projects to benefit social causes. Participants can learn new skills, make new friends, and share ideas with others. We encourage all students from different backgrounds and disciplines to come join in the hacking! 

There are four main tracks, each with its own prize category:

• Health/Environmental
• Legal/Justice
• Housing
• Education

If you don't have a team or an idea, it's not a problem. You can find a team once you arrive. Most hackers arrive without a team. You will often find inspiration for ideas at the hackathon. We will also help guide students to others who want to hack for the same track.

If you don't code, it's a wonderful opportunity to learn something new. There will be workshops geared towards beginners and mentors to help you throughout the event. Don't let this stop you from applying! We want those in the non-tech majors as much as we want students in the tech majors.

The Cure Scholars program is offering a paid internship ($4,000), for a one-year commitment to teaching and facilitating after-school and Saturday science lessons to middle school students on the campus of University of Maryland, Baltimore. Applications are available online and we will accept them until July 31st, 2017, but positions fill quickly so we encourage students to apply as soon as possible. 5-6pm- Volunteers will help set up the room and decorate. 2-3 volunteers needed, volunteers to greet the refugee youth attending the performance and engage them in icebreaker games and conversation. 5-8 volunteers needed.

5:30-7pm- Volunteers will watch the food table to make sure things are running smoothly. They will have the opportunity to watch the performance from this location. 2-4 volunteers needed.

Day 3- Wednesday April 5th:

4:30-5pm- Volunteers will assist with set-up of the room and greet representatives from the organizations as they arrive. 2-3 volunteers needed.
5-7pm- Volunteers will serve as bartenders for the mocktail evening, making and preparing non-alcoholic mixed drinks. 2-3 volunteers needed
7-7:30pm- Volunteers will assist with cleaning up the room. 2-3 volunteers needed.

Day 4- Thursday April 6th:
5:15-6pm- Volunteers will help set-up the room. 3-4 volunteers needed.
6-6:30pm- Volunteers will help facilitate an informal “test your knowledge” game among guests as they arrive and get their plates of food. 2-6 volunteers needed.
6-6:30pm- Volunteers will help serve food. 2-4 volunteers needed.
8-8:30- Volunteers will assist in cleaning up the room. 2-3 volunteers needed.

Are you an emergency medical services major, or have an interest in the field?

Do you want to be able to do life-saving work while you’re still in college?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you should look in to becoming a volunteer EMT or paramedic for the Arbutus Volunteer Fire Department (AVFD.) The non-profit organization is currently looking for new members, and anyone who has any level of interest is welcome to apply to be a volunteer. If you're worried about the time commitment of receiving the training: rest assured that the AVFD is very understanding, and will help work around your busy schedule to make becoming certified a reality. Receiving the training is completely free, and once you’re a certified volunteer, there are a multitude of benefits. For starters: volunteers receive tax breaks. Additionally, if you’re pre-med, or have any interest in medicine, it will act as a huge resume booster. And if you end up absolutely loving the work, and want to make it into a career, then you will have job security (EMTs and paramedics have a job growth rate that is over double the national average.) And most importantly: you’ll be doing incredibly rewarding work each and every day that you volunteer, being able to go home with the knowledge that you helped others in their time of need.
