A young and rising star in the field, Astek Diagnostics is a medical device company founded in 2021 by Dr. Mustafa Al Adhami, and currently stationed in Research & Technology Park. The Astek team comprises several UMBC alumni, physicians and scientists who bring with them diverse skill sets to advance the science and mission of the company. Astek works on developing a fast, accurate, and precise UTI diagnostic technology to reduce patient complications and lower the cost of healthcare. Currently, the system, called JIDDU, is under development to become a multipurpose platform that can confirm bacterial infections and assess antibiotic sensitivity across different samples, including urine, CSF, effluent, and blood. Astek’s goal is to join the market with a urine-based test, with the clinical trials expected to be completed by January 2025. Through a recent partnership with MedStar Health for pilot study, the company has achieved remarkable R&D milestones.

Established in 1870 by the legacy of Edwin Augustus Stevens, Stevens Institute of Technology (Stevens Tech) was one of the first technological schools to ever exist in America, offering a degree specifically in Mechanical Engineering. As of 2024, Stevens Tech has seen extensive growth in terms of majors (35 undergraduate majors in STEM and liberal arts, 58 Master’s and 20 PhD programs), as well as enrollment with over 6,000 students at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
Currently named Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, the chemical engineering department at Stevens Tech resulted from the merging of the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and the Department of Metallurgy in 1998. The synergy of both engineering programs within the same department gives Stevens Tech a unique edge. This strength is reflected in the diverse research that faculty in the department spearhead, including inorganic material synthesis and crystal engineering, multi-scale modeling and simulation, nanophotonics and fiber optics, polymer synthesis, characterization, and processing, reaction engineering, and tissue and cancer engineering.
