<Title>Geriatrics and Gerontology Education and Research Program (GGEAR)</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div>The GAIT project is a FREE PROGRAM available to health and social science undergraduate, graduate, and professional students enrolled in a University System of Maryland (USM) institution. This educational initiative is designed to enhance the skills and knowledge of healthcare and social service students in assessing and managing the care of older adults. GAIT is funded through the University System of Maryland (USM) Redeployment Grant System.</div><div><br></div><div>GAIT introduces the comprehensive geriatric assessment and the fundamentals of interprofessional (interdisciplinary) collaboration through both didactic and clinical sessions. The clinical portion involves interprofessional teams of students and trainees from various disciplines, such as medicine, nursing, pharmacy, social work, dentistry, and physical therapy, working together on an assigned case.</div><div><br></div><div>During the Spring 2026 semester, both virtual and in-person GAITs are available. In-person GAIT projects are full-day, on-site events. Virtual GAITs use the Blackboard platform and Zoom conferencing services. All GAIT project participants receive a certificate of completion.</div><div><br></div><div>See attachment for details. </div></div>

<Title>Management of Aging Services Internship</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div>Students who are majoring in Management of Aging Studies are required to complete AGNG 460: The Management of Aging Services Internship but did you know that this is also available for aging minors?  </div><div><br></div><div><div>An internship allows you the opportunity to get firsthand experience in the field, network, and meet other like-minded individuals.  It also looks great on a resume!  We also have the ability to discuss site placements that intersect with your major.</div><div><br></div><div>I know many of you may be working an outside job while also taking a full course load.  The internship requires students to work in a field placement for a total of 102.5 hours over the course of the semester.  This equates to about 8-9 hours per week.  Students will work with their site supervisors on determining a schedule.  For example, you may request to attend your site one 8 hour day each week or 4 hours twice a week.  </div></div><div><br></div><div>

    Nine credits in AGNG courses with a grade of 'C' or better. Completion of 60

    </div><div>AGNG 460 - Management of Aging Services Internship is a 3 credit course.  Departmental Consent is required to enroll.  Students who are interested should talk to the AGNG advisor or schedule an appointment with Professor Lauren Price  <a href="laprice@umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">laprice@umbc.edu</a>.  </div><div><br></div><div><u>AGNG 460 Course Description: </u></div><div>This course is part of the internship requirement in the Management of Aging Services major. Students are placed at established agencies that provide services to older adults. Students will either undertake a new project directly related to the management of aging services or participate in an ongoing project designed to improve and/or evaluate services for older adults. Students work under the direction of an immediate supervisor at the agency and are overseen by the Internship Director at the Erickson School. Student internship placements will reflect the student’s career interests and career plans in government/policy, human services/aging network, or business/for-profit services. Students attend a one-hour internship seminar twice monthly during the semester.</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div></div>

    <div class="html-content"><p><strong>Caring Robots in an Aging World: New Research from Japan, Denmark, and Germany<br>Thursday, November 6 | 4:00–5:30 PM | AOK Library Gallery</strong></p><p>Join us for an engaging talk with Dr. Shawn Bender, a cultural anthropologist and professor of East Asian Studies at Dickinson College. His research focuses on the impact of robotics on relations of work and care.</p><p>The potential of robotics technologies to assist in the care of older adults and people with disabilities has attracted great interest worldwide. To date, few studies have examined the impact of care robots outside of laboratory experiments or short-term field trials.     <div class="html-content"><p>Join us for a meaningful pro bono opportunity in partnership with the Baltimore County Bar Association, UMBC, and the Erickson School of Aging. At this clinic, volunteer attorneys will be paired with UMBC student volunteers to assist local seniors in completing Advance Directive forms using the <a href="https://mhcc.maryland.gov/mhcc/pages/hit/hit_advancedirectives/hit_advancedirectives.aspx" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Maryland Attorney General's standard form.</a></p><p>This is a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience working alongside attorneys, interact directly with clients, and learn more about the importance of advance planning in elder law.
