SUNDAY CATHOLIC MASS NOW AT ARBUTUS UNITED METHODIST!

<Tagline>STARTING THIS SUNDAY, MARCH 4th at 5pm!!</Tagline>

JMJ+

Dear fellows Catholics - we now have a Sunday home!

Many thanks to Reverend Ira Barr of Arbutus United Methodist (AUM) for opening their doors to us. Thank you to all of you for your patience and flexibility as we have hopped around during our recent "see how many lecture halls we can celebrate Mass in" tour of recent weeks. AUM is more than close (check out the map of campus below). It is practically the same distance as the ITE or the Administration Building. We will also be having Discovering Christ at AUM. We will continue to have Wednesday dinner and Mass in the IFC.

Many great reasons come to mind for making this switch. Here are a few:

1) IT IS A STEADY PLACE TO WORSHIP

We have switched rooms for Sunday Mass almost every week this semester. The Catholics have shown remarkable flexibility and patience, especially with last minute announcements and signs posted on the doors of Lecture Hall 6. Worshipping at AUM gives us a place that can be a spiritual home.

2) EUCHARISTIC WORSHIP IS WORTHY OF A SACRED PLACE

We can and ought to pray anywhere at any time. Also, at the end of the day, we'll celebrate Mass where we need to - a lecture hall, a trailer, a classroom, etc. However, in the Eucharist our personal relationship with the Lord is at its greatest and strongest point - we receive His very Body and Blood! This is the food for our spiritual journey and the strength for nurturing our relationship with the Lord throughout the week. The Eucharist is the family banquet offering the One Sacrifice of Christ to the Father. Nothing less! It is worthy of our effort and of a sacred place.

3) WE NEED A PLACE SET ASIDE

All of us are busy about many things. Having a place that is only used for worship gives us a chance to lift our minds to the Lord who is with us always and to be reminded of His Hand in all things. Jesus brought Peter, James, and John to the mountain for the Transfiguration to strengthen them for the test of faith in the valley. We need the same thing.

4) IT IS CLOSE!!

We can't have a church building on campus. This is practically on campus:

http://www.mapquest.com/maps?address=1201+Maple+Ave&city=Arbutus&state=MD&zipcode=21227#e89f568760af7b1c05f43ba

Thank you all again for your flexibility and patience in recent weeks. Please don't hesitate to email me with any questions: frjohn@umbc.edu. I look forward to seeing you on Sunday!

Peace,

Fr. John

Conscience: DENIED

<Tagline>Cardinal O'Brien to Catholics in Archdiocese of Baltimore</Tagline>

The text of Cardinal-designate O'Brien's letter, written Jan. 25, follows:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I write to you concerning an alarming and serious matter that negatively impacts the Church in the United States directly, and that strikes at the fundamental right to religious liberty for all citizens of any faith. The federal government, which claims to be "of, by, and for the people," has just dealt a heavy blow to almost a quarter of those people - the Catholic population-and to the millions more who are served by the Catholic faithful.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced last week that almost all employers, including Catholic employers, will be forced to offer their employees' health coverage that includes sterilization, abortion-inducing drugs, and contraception. Almost all health insurers will be forced to include those "services" in the health policies they write. And almost all individuals will be forced to buy that coverage as a part of their policies.

In so ruling, the Administration has cast aside the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, denying to Catholics our Nation's first and most fundamental freedom, that of religious liberty. And as a result, unless the rule is overturned, we Catholics will be compelled either to violate our consciences, or to drop health coverage for our employees (and suffer the penalties for doing so). The Administration's sole concession was to give our institutions one year to comply.

We cannot-we will not-comply with this unjust law. People of faith cannot be made second class citizens. We are already joined by our brothers and sisters of all faiths and many others of good will in this important effort to regain our religious freedom. Our parents and grandparents did not come to these shores to help build America's cities and towns, its infrastructure and institutions, its enterprise and culture, only to have their posterity stripped of their God given rights. In generations past, the Church has always been able to count on the faithful to stand up and protect her sacred rights and duties. I hope and trust she can count on this generation of Catholics to do the same. Our children and grandchildren deserve nothing less.

And therefore, I would ask of you two things. First, as a community of faith we must commit ourselves to prayer and fasting that wisdom and justice may prevail, and religious liberty may be restored. Without God, we can do nothing; with God, nothing is impossible. Second, I would also recommend visiting www.usccb.org/conscience, to learn more about this severe assault on religious liberty, and how to contact Congress in support of legislation that would reverse the Administration's decision.

In the Lord,

Cardinal-designate Edwin F. O'Brien Apostolic Administrator

Praised be Jesus Christ!

It is a true blessing to announce our new Speaker Series. With his example and asking for his prayer, our speaker series will be a chance to dive deeply into what Jesus Christ and the Church offer to each of us, and how He fulfills His promise to give us abundant life.

The speakers will begin after the Wednesday 5:15pm Mass and will present during dinner, beginning at about 6:15 as everyone gets settled. All presentations will be in the Interfaith Center, unless otherwise noted. In the coming days, please look for more details of the following on the Events tab of the myumbc group and on our facebook page.

Here is our Fall line-up:

Wed., October 5 - Theology of the Body, Part 1 -- Donna Moga

Wed., October 12 - Theology of the Body, Part 2 -- Donna Moga

Wed., November 2 - Catholic Evangelization - Pete Ascosi

Wed., December 7 - Holiday Goodwill and the Faith - Speaker TBA

Looking forward to seeing you there!
