This session introduces UMBC faculty to the basics of generative AI and its implications for teaching and learning. It focuses on AI literacy by examining what these tools are, what they can and cannot do, basic prompting, ethical and responsible use, and how they may impact classroom practice. The University System of Maryland's Kirwan Center for Academic Innovation is hosting an online Generative AI Virtual Showcase  on Friday, April 24, 9am-3:30pm ET. Faculty, staff, and faculty/staff/student teams from Maryland institutions of higher education will describe and demonstrate their innovative approaches to incorporating Generative AI into teaching and learning practices. 

The virtual event features a keynote presentation and four concurrent session blocks with 42 presentations (including 9 from UMBC) exploring innovative approaches to teaching and learning with generative AI. Participants must register in advance to receive the Zoom link. Sessions include live auto-captions and accessible materials.

This session will continue to discuss course-level policies and move on to Chapter 10 "Grading and (Re-)Defining Quality". Artificial Intelligence is reshaping education, challenging traditional frameworks like Bloom's Taxonomy, a hierarchical framework used in education to classify learning objectives and cognitive skills according to their level of complexity. Structured as a pyramid, it progresses from basic lower-order thinking, such as remembering facts, to higher-order skills like analyzing, evaluating, and creating new ideas.

This session introduces a reframed Bloom's Taxonomy that expands beyond "Create" to include a new Transform layer, enabling learners to apply knowledge for real-world and social impact.   • Improve accessibility features directly within the LMS, such as alternative text generation, captioning, and adaptive formatting. 
  • Use external AI tools to audit and enhance course materials for universal design and ADA compliance. 
  • Support students with diverse learning needs by providing personalized, accessible pathways and just-in-time resources. 
  • Anticipate ethical and equity considerations when applying AI for accessibility in digital learning environments. 

By the end of this session, attendees will have a toolkit of approaches and examples they can immediately apply to ensure their courses are designed with accessibility at the core -- helping every learner thrive in AI-powered learning spaces.
