UMBC professor Yasmine Kotturi's selection as a CRA Trustworthy AI Fellow was featured on the Computing Research Association site this month. The fellowship is intended to help scholars shape frameworks for more trustworthy AI systems through structured interdisciplinary training, collaborative research, and national visibility. She was one of nine early-career researchers who were chosen for program funded by Microsoft based on their interdisciplinary approaches to AI that are both technically sound and socially responsible. 

Dr. Kotturi is an Assistant Professor in the Information Systems Department's Human-Centered Computing Program. She designs and builds sociotechnical systems that foster worker resilience by centering relational, community-driven practices and by scaffolding peer support among people navigating precarious forms of employment and entrepreneurship. Her research combines human-computer interaction with insights from labor studies and feminist theory to develop approaches such as community-based software development that shift power in how AI systems are built and used.

The article shares her thoughts on bringing together computing and the social sciences,  her current research projects, the impacts she hopes they will have on developing trustworthy AI systems, and perspectives on building better human-centered AI systems.

Topics include basic Gen AI literacy, a critical examination of student use of AI tools, equity and access, ethical concerns, credible sources of Gen AI information, and implications for assessment and pedagogy.

The FDC is co-sponsoring a series of three workshops facilitated by John Schumacher, Professor of Sociology, Anthropology and Public Health and a USM Generative AI Pedagogy Fellow for 2025-26. Whether you have already begun exploring AI for your teaching and for student learning, are an AI-skeptic, or are somewhere in between, joining Dr. Schumacher and your UMBC colleagues for these hands-on workshops will help you to deepen your understanding of how AI works, some of the ethical concerns of AI-usage, and when and how to use which Gen AI tools. These workshops will be held online via Webex at noon on October 6, October 13, and October 27, 2025. They will repeat in November.

Ensuring the trustworthiness of language model outputs is essential for their adoption in academic research. This work presents a retrieval-augmented LLM agent designed to generate verifiable responses with sentence-level source attribution. The system employs a structured two-stage retrieval approach. In the first stage, lightweight neural modules adapt both query and document representations to improve alignment and enhance the quality of initial retrieval.

The second stage applies an advanced selection method to refine and finalize the evidence set. This pipeline is interpretable and attribution-aware, allowing users to trace each sentence in the generated output back to its supporting source. By combining structured retrieval with fine-grained attribution, the proposed architecture enables generation that is fluent, contextually accurate, and grounded in verifiable evidence. This design aligns with the rigorous standards required for scholarly communication.

Who can participate? You must be

  1. 18 years or older 

  2. Fluent in English

  3. Able to access to a laptop or desktop computer and a stable internet connection

  4. Have a basic understanding of how to use an AI Chatbot (e.g., ChatGPT).

What will I do? 

This task will be completed remotely online and will take 20 minutes or less. You will use an LLM chatbot called Aletheia to answer three on-screen questions and complete a brief survey about your experience.

What will I get? 

You will be entered into a raffle for a $50 Amazon gift card.

As a requirement of the Maryland AI Act (SB 818 of 2024), the State and University System of Maryland may require UMBC to be aware of all AI uses, programs, projects, and their associated risks. Help us stay ahead of the regulatory curve in the quickly evolving intersection of artificial intelligence and higher education. UMBC faculty should mail Anupam Joshi, UMBC's chief AI officer, and copy to Kyle Pokorny with a brief description of their AI use that is not a research project.

The university's AI working group, in coordination with University Communications and Marketing, has created an Artificial Intelligence at UMBC logo that should be used on all projects and programs moving forward. The goal is to create a common identity across UMBC's myriad AI efforts. Generative AI tools like Chat GPT have shifted who gets to participate in data analysis and how. Opportunities exist for large language models (LLMs) to support tasks like code writing for data cleaning and exploration. This has potential to make it easier to engage with data, particularly for those that lack formal technical skills or have limited technical support. In this talk, Jennifer reflects on how LLMs have changed her own workflow by streamlining analysis and lowering barriers to iterating and exploring. She also poses questions around who gets to be considered a data analyst now, and what skills or literacies may matter most.

Jennifer Posada is a UMBC PhD student working with professor Lujie Karen Chen in the Lab for Informatics for Human Flourishing. Her research is focused on  Automation and AI for Personal Informatics Data storytelling.
