Student Guide to Artificial Intelligence
Students and many others may find the 2025 Student Guide to Artificial Intelligence helpful in understanding how to use the new generative AI systems more effectively. The guide was developed by an initiative led by  Elon University‘s Imagining the Digital Future Center and the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U). UMBC’s DoIT and Faculty Development Center will hold a “study day” panel 12-1pm on Wednesday, May 14, to explore how generative AI systems can help students prepare for exams. Three UMBC faculty members will show and tell how and why they are exploring the use of GenAI tools in formative assessment of student learning.

Panelists and use cases include Sarah Bass (Chemistry), who will discuss the use of Google NotebookLM for Chem 101 tutorials and virtual assistance, Tim Finin (CSEE) on effective exploration of questions from old exams, and John Schumacher (ANTH/SOCY) use of AI to generate case studies and assess student analyses of them. Each panelist will have 5-10 minutes to briefly describe how AI could be or was used to efficiently and effectively assess student formative practice, related issues and opportunities, and the next steps.

The Maryland Center for Computing Education (MCCE) will hold a free one-day event at UMBC on Saturday, June 21, 2025, focused on AI in all levels of education. The Future Ready Maryland AI Summit is unique for all PreK-12 and higher education stakeholders, as it features student voices, opportunities, and educational resources for Maryland educators, school districts, colleges, and universities.

Federal and industry partners are invited to share educational opportunities for students, including internships, apprenticeships, and certification pathways. Potential supporters should complete this interest form, and those interested in presenting should use the Call for Proposals form.

Eugenia Novokshanova and Michelle Kassorla from Georgia State University, Perimeter College, bring extensive experience in composition and AI integration. Dr. Novokshanova is a Multimodal Writing AI specialist with a Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition, and Dr. Kassorla, an EDUCAUSE AI expert panel member. Together, they lead The Multimodal AI Project and actively research AI's impact on student learning.

They will introduce us to their work and reflect on their experiences, doubts, and breakthroughs, creating works using these technologies. This will be followed by a discussion moderated by UMBC Assistant Professor of Art Eric Millikin.

Although artificial intelligence emerged as an academic discipline in the mid-1950s, general use and public awareness of AI have materialized only in the past three years with the launch of generative AI chatbots and its role in the general applications that we use on a daily basis, through web search engines, virtual assistants, and recommendation systems. We are now at a critical juncture to consider the impacts of generative AI on creativity through ethical, cultural, and societal lenses.

Google is making its top AI models available free for US college students from now until the end of the 2025-26 academic year.The offer includes free access to Gemini Advanced, NotebookLM Plus, Whisk, and 2TB of Google storage. Students must sign up by June 30, 2025, verify their student status, and reverify their student status in the Fall of 2025 to continue for the 2025-26 academic year.

Note that students will have to use this when on a personal Gmail account, not their UMBC Gmail account. This means you are subject to the terms and conditions Google has decided, not the ones the state and UMBC have worked out, which protect your personal data and limit its use in training. If you do not cancel, you will be charged when the free trial offer ends on August 31, 2026.

She will share the results and insights from ongoing work initiated through a UMBC Learning Analytics Fellowship award. Using innovative teaching strategies, Professor Williams helps students learn to critically analyze, annotate, and critique diverse visualization examples beyond typical course materials. By incorporating deeper qualitative analysis, richer demographic data, and evaluating how student-created charts evolve over time, the project aims to enhance visual literacy and critical thinking skills significantly.

Her presentation will explore practical approaches to identifying and addressing student misconceptions, ideas for engaging students with foraging and curating their own learning examples, and gaining strategies applicable to enhancing visual literacy across various disciplines.
