UMBC-Shady Grove will hold two free AI-related online workshops this summer featuring collaborative and hands-on examples and real-world applications.
This two-day workshop provides an introduction to machine learning for participants from all backgrounds and experience levels. While a basic understanding of Python is required, participants will receive introductory materials to help them get started, covering essential Python concepts and the key libraries used in machine learning, ensuring that even those new to programming can confidently follow along. The workshop covers the entire process—preparing data, building, evaluating, deploying machine learning models, and displaying results in colorful plots.
This workshop explores the rapidly evolving world of LLMs and generative AI systems, building upon the foundational knowledge gained in the machine learning workshop. Participants will learn how to use Python API calls to generate text, images, and videos with state-of-the-art generative AI models. The workshop will guide them through practical examples and real-world applications, enabling them to experiment with cutting-edge tools and understand the underlying principles of generative AI.

Space is limited; register now to secure a spot or use this WebEx link to join online. ]]>UMBC CSEE professors Konstantinos Kalpakis and Dong Li received research funding from the University of Maryland, Baltimore’s Institute for Clinical and Translational Research to collaborate with UMB partners to develop innovative healthcare technology.
Professor Kalpakis and his colleagues are developing a new approach to help trauma physicians make better-informed treatment decisions quickly. The team is working on a machine-learning framework that can help ER doctors predict medical outcomes, such as which patients will experience severe complications from trauma and what their blood transfusion needs may be.
Professor Li's work will use AI technology to develop a reliable method to monitor blood pressure on a smartphone outfitted with ultrasound sensors to measure blood flow and using the built-in microphone to record heart sounds. The partnership with UMB will allow the team to conduct clinical trials, with both healthy individuals and those with hypertension, to rigorously evaluate the system’s accuracy and effectiveness.

I am Niraj Sitaula, a PhD candidate in the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University. I am conducting this survey for my doctoral thesis to examine differences among different student populations about their perspectives around ethics and trust in AI.
