    <div class="html-content"><div>70 years ago, on August 31, 1955, the term <strong>Artificial Intelligence</strong> was first used in a proposal from John McCarthy entitled <a href="http://jmc.stanford.edu/articles/dartmouth/dartmouth.pdf" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">A Proposal for the Dartmouth Summer Research Project on Artificial Intelligence</a>. </div><div><br></div><div>The proposal was submitted to the Rockefeller Foundation by <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_McCarthy_(computer_scientist)" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">McCarthy</a> and three co-organizers, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claude_Shannon" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Claude Shannon</a>, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nathaniel_Rochester_(computer_scientist)" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Nathaniel Rochester</a>, and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvin_Minsky" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Marvin Minsky</a>. It was funded, and the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dartmouth_workshop" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">eight-week workshop</a> held in the summer of 1956 is widely regarded as the founding event of the artificial intelligence field.</div><div><br></div><div><br></div></div>

    <div class="html-content">The Baltimore Business Journal published an article, <a href="https://www.bizjournals.com/baltimore/news/2025/08/22/umbc-colleges-navigate-ai-use-classroom.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Slowly Beginning to Adapt</a>, on how UMBC is is adjusting to the latest generative AI systems.  The piece is part of the BBJ's <a href="https://www.bizjournals.com/baltimore/news/2025/08/21/when-ai-meets-main-street-series.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">AI Meets Main Street</a> series on how AI is upending the business world.  The articles was based on an interview with UMBC faculty Anupam Joshi, John Schumacher, and Tim Finin.<div><div><br></div><div><div>The article quotes Professor Joshi's comments on teaching programming: 'Previous generations adapted to the calculator, the printing press and to the written word. We're slowly beginning to adapt and ask ourselves the question, how do you teach computer science, in a world where people can just tell the computer to spit out code?'"</div><div><br></div><div>It also mentions Schumacher's approach for using AI as a tool for brainstorming, rather than extracting facts, asa  key to promoting responsible use. "Students who rely too much on the technology are vulnerable to endemic errors in AI answers called hallucinations that range from relatively innocuous mistakes to completely made-up facts. Google’s AI search tool once infamously identified former President Barack Obama as a Muslim, leading the tech giant to remove AI answers for some questions."</div></div></div></div>

    <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>UMBC professor </span><a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s43681-025-00816-3#auth-Aharona-Rosenthal-Aff1" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Aharona Rosenthal</span></a><span> has a new paper, <a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s43681-025-00816-3" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Can AI make Hitler cry?</a>, exploring the use of AI in Holocaust education across four generations in Spinger’s </span><a href="https://link.springer.com/journal/43681" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>AI and Ethics</span></a><span> journal. The paper presents an empirical comparison of four generations of Holocaust descendants’ perceptions of AI-generated Holocaust content. </span></p><p><span>It reveal a generational trust gap, showing that the first and second generations prioritize emotional authenticity and remain skeptical of AI, third- and fourth-generation participants show greater trust in digital platforms and AI-driven tools for Holocaust education. The fourth generation’s use of AI-powered tools, including short-form content on TikTok and Instagram Reels, represents a new mode of Holocaust engagement, but also raises ethical concerns for gamification and the trivialization of trauma. It advocates for a hybrid model that integrates AI with human storytelling and scholarly oversight to ensure responsible Holocaust education.</span></p><div><span><br></span></div></span></div>

<Title>People use the Internet to diagnose themselves&#8212;Can this UMBC student&#8217;s work help moderate medical content on the web?</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p>In 2024, information systems Ph.D. student <span><a href="https://knacc.umbc.edu/people/students/ommo-clark/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Ommo Clark</a></span> penned an <strong><span><a href="https://businessday.ng/life/article/why-do-we-self-medicate/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">opinion piece</a></span> </strong>for BusinessDay Nigeria exploring why many Nigerians diagnose and treat their medical conditions themselves, often turning to unreliable online information.</p><p>While the essay was inspired by firsthand experiences in her native country, the impulse to consult “Dr. Google” is a worrying global trend, Clark says, and one that has motivated her Ph.D. work. It’s unlikely that people will stop going online with health questions, so Clark is researching ways that AI could help patients, healthcare providers, public health officials, and content platforms better understand and evaluate the sea of medically related content on the Internet.</p><p><span>Ommo’s efforts were recently recognized when one of her research papers, co-authored with information systems professor </span><span><a href="https://karuna.informationsystems.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Karuna Joshi</a></span><span>, won the Best Student Paper Award at the </span><span><strong><a href="https://services.conferences.computer.org/2025/icdh/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">IEEE International Conference on Digital Health 2025</a></strong></span><span>, held in July in Helsinki, Finland.     <div class="html-content">A research paper by UMBC Information Systems PhD student <a href="https://knacc.umbc.edu/people/students/ommo-clark/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><strong>Ommo Clark</strong></a> co-authored with her advisor Professor <a href="https://knacc.umbc.edu/karuna-pande-joshi/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><strong>Karuna Joshi</strong></a> received the Best Student Paper award at the <a href="https://services.conferences.computer.org/2025/icdh/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><strong>IEEE International Conference on Digital Health</strong></a> held earlier this month in Helsinki as part of the IEEE Services Congress.<div><br></div><div>The paper addressed the problem of identifying <span>health misinformation on social media platforms, which </span><span>poses a threat to public health by contributing to hesitancy in vaccines, delayed medical interventions, and the adoption of untested or harmful treatments. </span></div><div><br></div><div>Clark and Joshi evaluated their hybrid approach to combining LLM and knowledge-graph technologies on a dataset of Reddit posts discussing chronic health conditions, and showed the benefits compared to models that only use text or knowledge-graphs.     <div class="html-content">The UMBC Philosophy department has added a new oourse, <strong><strong><a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/philosophy/posts/151079" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Philosophy of AI</a></strong> </strong>(PHIL 378), to the Fall 2025 class schedule. The course will be taught by Philosophy faculty Jessica Pfeifer and Greg Ealick, who will explore the philosophical foundations and implications of Artificial Intelligence. The class will meet MWF at 11 in PAHB 229.<div><br></div><div>Philosophy 378 will examine core questions about the nature of AI, such as: What is AI? What is the relationship between AI and scientific knowledge? How can bias in AI be addressed? Can AI predict, influence, or even control human behavior? What is the relationship between mind and machine? Can AI replicate human capacities for cognition, creativity, and consciousness?
