UMBC Archiving Unviewed Panopto Videos (01/30/23)

<Tagline>No content will be permanently deleted at this time</Tagline>

To comply with recent changes to product licensing, beginning 01/30/23, all Panopto videos that have not been viewed during the preceding 18 months will be moved to archive storage. If one wishes to retain any content on the production server, they need only access the video(s) once prior to 01/30/23. Alternatively, videos can be restored to our production server to view within 48 hours.

Since UMBC's adoption of Panopto in fall 2018, we have witnessed steady growth in its use until the onset of the pandemic, at which point usage patterns shifted significantly as all instruction moved fully online. To address increased storage demand across its client base, Panopto changed its pricing from a model based on consumption to one based on storage. Our new contract provides roughly 10x more archive storage than production storage (50,500 hours vs 6,000 hours). The latter set of hours represent traditional, on-demand media, whereas the former are held in a separate yet expediently retrievable storage.

Randomize test pages & lock discussions in Jan Ultra update

<Tagline>New option to create model essay response for graders</Tagline>

Test pagination was introduced to Ultra courses last year, creating new ways to present clusters of questions to students that focused on content or reduced cognitive load. In this month's update, test pagination can be randomized for academic integrity. The first page can be locked in place if the content contains test instructions. Additionally, if the Ultra test contains non-question elements, such as text blocks, these can also be locked in place while questions around them are randomized. When combined with question pools, this creates a truly unique testing experience for students.

Instructors can now lock discussions after the due date has passed, setting a discussion to read only. When this feature is enabled, students cannot create, reply to, or edit posts after the due date.
Poll Everywhere Pilot Continues for SP2023

<Tagline>Supporting Engagement with New Audience Response System</Tagline>

DoIT is pleased to announce the availability of Poll Everywhere, which now includes the ability of students, faculty and staff to login with their UMBC credentials. Many UMBC faculty are already leveraging Poll everywhere in their teaching. Through the Fall 2022 term, nearly 2,000 students have participated in at least one Poll Everywhere activity.

Poll Everywhere is an audience response system that presenters can utilize in both face-to-face and online courses instead of traditional, physical clickers. There will be no cost to members of the UMBC community to use this platform.

Poll Everywhere is web-based and can be managed both through a web browser or through the Poll Everywhere application. Poll Everywhere allows you to ask questions of your students, collect their responses by inviting them to respond through a website or phone text link, and share their collective responses in a variety of formats that update in real-time for everyone to see. It encourages all students to engage with learning content in an interactive way, using a tablet, laptop or mobile phone. Poll Everywhere questions can be launched from a browser or integrated in slide presentations such as Google Slides or Microsoft PowerPoint. Questions and results can be shared with other colleagues as well. Additionally, Poll Everywhere can be used during synchronous, online class meetings since no other hardware is needed, and the response system integrates with Blackboard allowing instructors to assign points and grade responses.

Please note that on Jan. 15, 2023 all existing Poll Everywhere accounts with a UMBC email account will be updated to require UMBC SSO access and that instructors and students will need to access Poll Everywhere via UMBC Single Sign On (SSO).
Dec Ultra Update Features Improved Drag & Drop, Course Links

<Tagline>New report for student progress through course content</Tagline>

This month, Ultra updates bring improvements to drag and drop functionality to the course outline, allowing instructors to easily move and rearrange content. Keyboard commands can also be used to move content. Additionally, a new feature provides course links, or shortcuts, to course content on the main page, which helps highlight or promote important content. For example, use course links to encourage students to revisit an earlier activity to reinforce learning. Course links provide access to content without excessive scrolling and reduce clicking.

A significant improvement to the course copy tool expands the panel for identifying and selecting content from multiple courses and organizations. Instructors can easily search for course names or courseIDs, or page through their available courses. From there, they can select an entire course to copy, or drill down into courses to select folders or individual pieces of content to copy. Multiple content items from a variety of courses can be selected from one interface, reducing your time when preparing a course. Exclusive to Ultra.

Image 1: Example of new course copy interface

Additional enhancements to Ultra include:

Single Student Progress Report: If you'd like to gain more insight into the progress students are making in your course, this new report will help you see the path each student is taking in your course and engage early with students who may be falling behind, or adjust course content. The report lets you view the content you've created for students, the progress students have made (with time/date stamps), and the current visibility status of each item. Accessible from individual content or the gradebook, the report is only available if you have progress tracking enabled in the course. Exclusive to Ultra.

Image 2: Example of Single Student Progress Report

The December update includes:

Add descriptions to question banks, which are displayed with the title. You can also search the titles and descriptions to question banks.

Unsupported font colors are now removed during a content copy or course conversion from an Original course. Although Original Course View users can choose any color for text, content can be hard to read or not accessible — for example, yellow text on white background. The Ultra Course View has a curated selection of font colors to ensure readability (black, gray, purple, blue, and green).

Student Preview helps instructors experience their course contents and settings.
