Learning Analytics Mini Grants CFP Due 6/2/23

<Tagline>ICYMI: SP23 LA workshops all recorded</Tagline>

UMBC's Division of Information Technology (DoIT), in partnership with the Office of the Provost, is pleased to announce the call for proposals for the 2023 Learning Analytics (LA) Mini Grants. This initiative aims to encourage, identify, and exchange effective practices to enhance student success and retention.

The mini grants are specifically designed to address two key areas of focus:

Student Success and Retention: The grants welcome proposals that explore the relationships between activities and learning in one course and outcomes in other courses. By investigating these connections, instructors can gain insights into strategies that can improve student success and retention rates. This research is particularly crucial for courses with low success rates, critical progression points, or those imparting fundamental skills required for success in the major or program.

Faculty Development and Support: Recipients of the mini grants will receive a $2,000 professional development award, renewable annually, directed to their faculty member or department's PeopleSoft chart string account. In addition to access to warehouse data (REX), recipients will also receive support for Tableau, a powerful data visualization tool. Furthermore, participants will be expected to present a report at the conclusion of their project, and they will have the opportunity to engage with the LA Community of Practice. These grants also provide an opportunity for recipients to use their results to compete for the prestigious Hrabowski Innovation Fund award.

The LA Mini Grants build upon the university's commitment to utilizing data-informed insights to improve student outcomes. In line with this objective, the Provost's office, in collaboration with DoIT's Analytics & Instructional Technology groups, has been organizing workshops on supporting student success throughout the academic year. These workshops, illustrated by our Spring 2023 lineup below, have covered various topics faculty may want to explore further in their own mini-grant proposals:

Democratizing the Doer Effect: Using AI to Scale Learning by Doing (2/24/23)

The Case of Test-Optional Admissions: A Pandemic Natural Experiment (3/3/23)

How Analytics Informs UMBC's Strategic Planning (4/7/23)

How Analytics Improved a Dept's Student Success & Enrollment (5/5/23)

These presentations have provided valuable knowledge and resources to support faculty in their understanding and utilization of data to support their pedagogy, and the meeting recordings linked through each event are available for anyone with a UMBC account.

The LA Mini Grants program presents an exceptional opportunity for faculty members to enhance their teaching practices and contribute to the university's commitment to student success and retention. Interested faculty members are invited to submit their applications by Friday, June 2, 2023. The application package should include a brief abstract that could be published on the UMBC website if accepted, a maximum three-page research project proposal, and a letter of support from their department chair. Providing this information within specific contexts of the course, particularly where engagement and collaboration occur, provides a means for instructors and classmates to address each other in ways that align with individual identity and expression.

Pronouns are visible within many areas of an Ultra course including roster, discussions, groups, and gradebook.
May Learning Opportunities and Events

<Tagline>It's an exciting month over here in Workplace Learning!</Tagline>

We are in the home stretch of the Spring semester here at UMBC and we continue to offer lots of opportunities for faculty and staff learning and wellness.

From a wellness perspective, the month of May is both Mental Health Awareness Month and Skin Cancer Awareness Month. Faculty and staff should be encouraged to take care of their own mental health as well as be aware of our student's mental health challenges, especially at this time of year. We continue our Community Mindfulness for Mental Health sessions this month with both in-person and virtual sessions that are open to everyone in our community. Check out resources for both campaigns on the HR Wellness Initiative page.

We are thrilled to be offering two large-scale events this month to tap into personal growth and community engagement. First, we have our brand-new HR Week! May 8-12th, HR will offer over 10 different sessions on a variety of topics of interest to faculty and staff. We kick off this week on Monday, May 8th with a Virtual Meet & Greet, with two times available to fit your schedule: 11:00 am and 3:00 pm. Please check out the HR Week web page for details on all of the sessions and how to register.

Our second, exciting feature this month, is Retriever Talks 2023! Our third cohort brings eight community-selected speakers to the stage to tell their own stories in Retriever Talks: Revealing Our Common Unity in CommUNITY. When an individual shares their story with the larger community, we can all experience what it means to make an impact. When we hear our organizational values reflected through diverse stories and lived experiences, we realize a sense of collective identity and belonging that is inclusive of multiple perspectives in ways that are powerful, palpable, and vital in promoting thriving workplace cultures. Please join us May 17th in the Final Arts Recital Hall. Doors open at 9:30am with the program beginning promptly at 10:00. We follow the event with a reception in the Recital Hall Lobby at 12:00pm. To learn more about this year's speakers, and to register for the event, please don't miss our Retriever Talks 2023 web page.

We look forward to seeing you soon at one of these exciting events!

Copy test questions to Ultra question banks in May update

<Tagline>Additional improvements for grading, outreach, assessments</Tagline>

As the spring semester concludes, the May update to Ultra brings several enhancements to assessments, grading, engagement, and content creation.

Test questions are some of the most valuable resources in a course. Instructors invest significant time and effort creating and refining banks of test questions. These banks help instructors create dynamic, robust assessments or easily reuse questions across various assessments. In the May update, instructors can copy questions from existing assessments into questions banks with the Reuse Question option in the Question Bank. Questions can also be copied from question bank to question bank using this method.

Image 1: Example of notification when questions are copied into a question bank

When tracking student submissions on an assessment, instructors may need to send timely and contextual outreach. In this update, instructors can sort submissions by type and select students to send a message. For example, an instructor may wish to send a message to students who haven't submitted the assignment yet. Selecting these students will craft a message interface for instructors to create a custom outreach. Selecting "send as email" ensures the message is sent external to Blackboard. Messages are confidential so students don't know who receives the communication.

Image 2: Example of filtering student list by No Submission and selecting those students to send a message.

Grading improvements include updates to rubrics and exemptions. To streamline grading, performance levels and criterion feedback are now hidden by default. However, a quick toggle can easily reveal these longer descriptions when grading. Additionally, when using the rubric, instructors can now quickly navigate using the tab key or up/down arrows. Finally, instructors can access the exemption feature within an by clicking on an individual cell in the gradebook grid view. Exemptions can also be applied from the submissions page and student detail view.

Image 3: Example of how to add or edit an exemption from the gradebook grid view.

Content improvements include faster file uploads and specifying how links open. Instructors and course builders who need to upload many resources into a course may find the new drag and drop folder to upload files to be an efficient way to quickly bring content into a course. Instructors should be mindful of quota and file format limitations. Opening links in a new window is generally considered best practice, especially for external websites to avoid browser security features blocking content from loading. However, there may be situations when an instructor or course author prefers linked content to open in a panel in the Ultra course. Instructors can now specify how a web link opens.

Additional updates to Ultra for May include:

Managing multiple submissions introduces some complexity for instructors.
