<Title>2021 M.O.S.T. State Summit: Call for Session Proposals</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div><span>The <a href="http://www.oer-maryland.org" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Maryland Open Source Textbook (M.O.S.T.) Initiative</a> is now accepting session proposals for the 2021 M.O.S.T. State Summit, which will take place virtually April 8-9, 2021. </span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>The theme of the 2021 conference is <strong>Using OER to Advance Equity and Inclusion</strong>. The COVID-19 pandemic and continuing patterns of racialized violence have brought to the forefront inequities in educational access, preparation, and experiences on our campuses. <em>How might the use of open educational resources (OER) advance equity and inclusion at our postsecondary institutions and statewide? </em></span></div><div><br></div><div>This call invites proposals for short concurrent presentations, birds of a feather sessions, and panel discussions related to this theme.</div><div><br></div><div>We are especially interested in proposals that:</div><div><ul><li><span>Demonstrate how institutions, units, and groups have been reflective about their use of OER and how they are exploring the contours of equity and inclusion in relation to OER;</span></li><li><span>Share strategies to modify, remix, and curate additional resources to diversify and extend the cultural relevance of OER materials;</span></li><li><span>Describe concrete strategies for reducing and eliminating barriers to engaging with OER for faculty, students, and/or staff;</span></li><li><span>Showcase faculty and student work with open education in Maryland, and highlight resources created and adapted by Maryland faculty and staff; and</span></li><li><span>Examine the relationship between OER, pedagogical innovation, and student success.</span></li></ul></div><div>The submission deadline is February 5, 2021, with notifications sent out by February 19, 2021. </div><div><br></div><div>Learn more and submit online: <a href="https://www.usmd.edu/cai/most-2021-state-summit" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">https://www.usmd.edu/cai/most-2021-state-summit</a> </div></div>

Each week, we curate talks on topics that matter NOW for all of us related to resilience, self-care, dealing with uncertain times, as well as ways to stay connected, inspired, and grounded when the earth beneath us is shifting.<div><br><p>Today's talk is <span><a href="https://www.ted.com/talks/tim_urban_inside_the_mind_of_a_master_procrastinator%20" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Inside the mind of a master procrastinator</a> </span><span>by Tim Urban. </span><span>Tim Urban knows that procrastination doesn't make sense, but he's never been able to shake his habit of waiting until the last minute to get things done. <Title>GO Chat Recap: Super Size Courses</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/instructional-technology/events/88691" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Last month</a>, we reflected on the transition from face-to-face instruction to online instruction for one of UMBC's largest introductory courses CHEM 101, with its instructors Drs. Sarah Bass and Tara Carpenter.
     <div><br></div><div>We discussed some recent articles that have been on our mind: 
    </div><div><ul><li>The Washington Post, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2020/11/12/test-monitoring-student-revolt/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Cheating-detection companies made millions during the pandemic. Now students are fighting back</a>. We understand that student privacy is incredibly important when using tools like Respondus Monitor, though we hope students and faculty consider the environment we all operate under with remote teaching and learning. 
    </li><li>Inside Higher Ed, <a href="https://www.insidehighered.com/digital-learning/article/2020/11/17/author-discusses-strategies-overcoming-natural-student" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Dealing with student distraction</a>. Students are always around distractions and instead we can shift the conversation to focus on engagement. Based on a recent PIVOT survey, UMBC students would agree that the need for breaks during extended synchronous sessions can help with their engagement. </li><li>The Guardian, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2020/dec/02/up-to-50-of-university-students-unhappy-with-online-learning-regulator-finds" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Up to 50% of university students unhappy with online learning, (Australian) regulator finds</a>. While some of the student concerns addressed in the article are not new, we talked about some of the universal challenges and how faculty and staff need to be flexible during uncertain times. </li></ul><span>Drs. Sarah Bass and Tara Carpenter originally began their journey shifting their super-sized CHEM 101 course through the <a href="https://swsupport.umbc.edu/alternate-delivery-program/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Alternative Delivery Program</a> (ADP), originally intending their course to be delivered in a hybrid model. This modality would give them the flexibility to foster <a href="https://fdc.umbc.edu/teaching/pedagogy/engaging-students-with-active-learning/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">synchronous active learning</a>, and asynchronous lecture and content delivery. </span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>While rebuilding many components of the course, Sarah and Tara were deeply intentional about the costs associated with course materials. Recognizing that high costs presented challenges to access course materials, Sarah and Tara employed <a href="https://www.usmd.edu/cai/open-educational-resources" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Open Educational Resources</a> which substantially lowered the total cost of materials for their course. 
    
    </span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>Assessments play an integral role in this course. Before UMBC's physical campus closed due to COVID-19, CHEM 101 participated in a limited pilot using <a href="https://akindi.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Akindi</a>, a scantron alternative where instructors can use any standard printer to print bubble sheets and use any standard scanner to scan completed bubble sheets directly into Blackboard. <Title>DoIT's Sherri Braxton Leaving UMBC</Title>

I’m writing to announce that </span><a href="https://doit.umbc.edu/itnm/staff/braxton/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span><strong>Sherri Braxton</strong></span></a><span>, Senior Director of Instructional Technology in the Division of Information Technology, has <a href="https://www.bowdoin.edu/news/2020/12/sherri-braxton-named-senior-director-for-digital-innovation.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">accepted</a> a new position as Senior Director of Digital Innovation at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. Her last day at UMBC will be Friday, January 15, 2021. </span></p><p><span>Since </span><a href="https://doit.umbc.edu/news/?id=43512" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>joining UMBC in 2014</span></a><span>, Sherri has made invaluable contributions to DoIT and become a highly-respected member of the campus community. In addition to leading the expansion of DoIT’s <a href="https://doit.umbc.edu/itnm/staff/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">instructional technology team</a> from three to ten full-time staff, she and her talented colleagues developed and led the popular </span><a href="http://pivot.umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>PIVOT</span></a><span> (Planning Instructional Variety in Online Teaching) initiative in </span><a href="https://news.umbc.edu/umbc-faculty-on-a-mission-to-prepare-robust-high-quality-online-classes-for-fall-semester/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>response</span></a><span> to the Coronavirus pandemic. With nearly 70 percent of all faculty participating in at least one workshop (and nearly 300 completing the </span><a href="https://pivot.umbc.edu/pivot+/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>PIVOT Plus certificate</span></a><span>), PIVOT has become the single largest instructional technology faculty development initiative in UMBC’s history. Students have </span><a href="https://doit.umbc.edu/news/?id=97557" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>praised</span></a><span> well-designed PIVOT courses as well. In addition, Sherri has </span><span>led DoIT’s competency based education and micro-credentialing efforts, including partnering in the popular </span><a href="https://financialsmarts.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>FinancialSmarts</span></a><span> literacy program for UMBC students. </span></p><p><span>“Apart from Sherri’s technical expertise and many accomplishments, she is known for her personal and professional commitment to inclusive excellence,” says </span><span><strong>Jack Suess</strong></span><span>, Vice President of IT and Chief Information Officer (CIO). “In short, people of all backgrounds, united by excellence, want to work for and with Sherri. She brings energy and quality to everything she does, and quite frankly, it’s contagious. Bowdoin CIO Michael Cato has worked with her to design a new role that is unique in higher education and fits perfectly to her skills. We’ll miss Sherri, but wish her nothing but the best in her new role.”</span></p><p><span>Beyond her work in DoIT, Sherri has also served on the UMBC Women’s Center advisory board, and was an active member and leader in the USM Academic Transformation Council, helping lead USM initiatives in accessibility, competency based education and open educational resources (OER), designed to help reduce student textbooks costs.</span></p><p><span>A co-director and faculty of the EDUCAUSE Learning Technology Leadership Program, Sherri has also served as co-leader of the EDUCAUSE Instructional Technology Community Group. <Title>Ultra enhances test feedback &amp; journal grading for winter</Title>

    <div class="html-content">Four exciting updates come to Ultra for winter courses. Grading enhancements for journals, test feedback release settings, an updated content editor, and support for HTML content are new features for Ultra courses.<div><br></div><div><strong>Journals</strong> - Instructors can clearly see when students post new journals and comments, and can view a single submission. Instructors can also use Ultra’s grading tools, including feedback and rubrics, to create and post grades. Both participation and submission views link to the gradebook. By default, students will be allowed to delete and edit their journal entries and comments, but instructors can also now choose to disable this permission.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>Tests</strong> - Instructors can enable more granular controls on when and what type of feedback is given to students when taking an assessment. Set up timed release to automated question feedback, correct answers, and question scores. Select when to show feedback: after submission, after due date, at a specific date, or after the assessment is graded. Students will see if and when feedback will be available for a specific assessment after they submit an attempt.</div><div><br></div><div><img src="https://blackboard.umbc.edu/bbcswebdav/institution/doitnews/ultra-updates/ultra_test_feedback.png" width="450" alt="Ultra test feedback settings" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"><br><div><div><br></div><div><strong>Gradebook</strong> - <span>In the Student List View, instructors will receive additional search capabilities, column sorting options, and enhanced page controls for both large and small devices.</span></div><div><br><div><div><strong>Formatting tools</strong> - Format content in a variety of different ways, including font colors, font sizes, and font style. A redesigned tool base provides a secondary bar that displays additional options, which is helpful on smaller screens. Students and faculty will see these changes everywhere they encounter the rich text editor in Ultra courses. (available January 7, 2021)</div><div><br></div><div><img src="https://blackboard.umbc.edu/bbcswebdav/institution/doitnews/ultra-updates/ultra_content_editor.png" width="275" alt="Ultra new content editor" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"></div><div><br></div><div><strong>HTML Content Block in Ultra Documents</strong> - <span>Instructors can create, edit, and delete custom HTML/CSS code blocks in Ultra course documents. Instructors can select Add HTML when creating a document to add their own HTML and CSS and fully customize the appearance of their Ultra course documents. We expect this functionality to be available for SP2021.</em></div></div></div></div></div><div><div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>Finally, a new feature for support will deploy in early January, allowing users to provide critical information to DoIT staff in the event a technical issue must be escalated to Blackboard. Currently, t</span>here isn’t an easy way to capture what a user was doing at the time an issue occurred. With this update, users will now be able to capture their most recent session data -- the last 30 actions the taken in Blackboard -- and send it to DoIT staff, which can be used to identify root issues or escalate to Blackboard support. This feature will be available in the Support Panel as well as anywhere the “Oops!
