This fall, the Center for Social Justice Dialogue is hosting Interact, a series designed to help participants hone the skills to successfully engage in dialogue across difference. If you are a student within WILL+, ILE, any other Living-Learning Communities (LLC) or are just an undergraduate student interested in upscaling your dialogue, register now!

WHAT IS INTERACT?

Interact is a four-week program for undergraduate students
focused on creating an introduction to the dialogue skills
required to engage in difficult conversations, dialogue across
    difference, and intercultural dialogue.

The goal of Interact at UMBC is to develop foundational
dialogue skillssuch as critical self-awareness, listening and
sharing authentically, asking questions toward creating deep
connections, and apologizing and adjusting appropriately, while
creating opportunities for participants to become more
self-aware. As a result of participation in Interact, participants will
have the skills to engage in dialogue within any type of situation
    and any topic of conversation.

Participants meet weekly in small groups for 90-minute sessions
that are co-facilitated by 2-3 facilitators. Each small group
consists of 10-15 participants. During these sessions, participants
learn and practice the necessary skills to become inclusive
    leadersand engaged community members.

Participants who attend at least three of the four
sessions will be entered into a raffle to win
prizes such as a PORTABLE PROJECTOR and
    WEIGHTED BLANKET!

To register, click this link!

Raised in San Salvador until being displaced to the US at age 10, she is inspired by her experiences growing up in the aftermath of the civil war to use poster work as a medium to self-express and center a queer migrant lens. As she explains, “political art is the people’s art as it has been used for many generations.” In this talk, Toruño will discuss how she utilizes street art as a tool of resistance.

Johanna Toruño is the founder of The Unapologetic Street Series, a street art series that is exhibited at public spaces, such as walls, utility posts, and mailboxes. Her bold imagery and statements, often adorned in lush florals, celebrate queer, working class, and immigrant communities. Through her work, Toruño challenges social norms and centers messages of self-reflection and self-acceptance. Using a soft aesthetic with colors that remind her of home, Toruño brings storytelling and a chance for her audience to re-learn and decolonize their own self to accessible spaces. Her political and social messages highlight topics of reimagining norms, and the joy of holding space for collective liberation. Johanna is a TED speaker and lecturer at Universities like Stanford, Princeton, Columbia, and others. Johanna's work has been featured in The New York Times, Teen Vogue, NPR, Nylon, and more. Johanna lives and works in Los Angeles with her partner and 2 dogs.
Ally’s New PDF “Quick Fixes” Empower Faculty in Minutes

<Tagline>Fix titles, language, OCR issues, right inside Blackboard</Tagline>

Imagine encountering a PDF flagged in Ally for having no embedded title, missing language metadata, or being a scanned-only image. Ally’s latest update brings a trio of PDF "quick fixes" that turn what used to require Adobe Acrobat into a streamlined, in‑context workflow, making remediation smoother and more efficient than ever before.

Now, without leaving Blackboard -- or opening a separate PDF editor -- faculty can:

Add or revise the document title via a built-in input field and click “Apply fix”

Specify the document’s language (English, Spanish, etc.) through a dropdown menu and apply the fix right away

Convert a scanned PDF to readable text with OCR: preview the result, optionally download the original scan, then apply the fix and let Ally overwrite the file seamlessly

These tools appear automatically in the Instructor Feedback panel.

Why It Matters to Faculty and Students

For too long, accessibility fixes meant downloading content, editing it in specialized tools, and reuploading. However, Ally’s quick fixes will help keep the workflow as tight as possible since files are overwritten in place to avoid duplication and storage bloat.

These changes don’t just boost Ally scores -- they enhance access, comprehension, and usability for all students, particularly those using assistive technologies.

Learn more about Ally

For more information about Ally, please join our upcoming session, Ally Reporting to Improve Course Accessibility, on September 30.

Ready to take the first step? Visit UMBC’s Digital Accessibility site or run an Ally course report today.
