Spotlight: Dr. Julian Manly Earls
Diverse Individuals in the STEM Field
Working at NASA for over forty years, Earls became NASA's first black section head, first black office chief, first black division chief, first black deputy director, and NASA's second black center director. Earls was hired as the director of the Glenn Research Center at Lewis Field in Cleveland, Ohio in 2003. As center director, Earls has been responsible for research, technology and systems development programs in aeronautical propulsion, space propulsion, space power, space communications, and microgravity sciences. He manages an annual budget and oversees all employees and contractors.
Earls has written several publications for technical and educational journals. He also wrote NASA’s first health physics guides. On two occasions, he has been awarded NASA medals for exceptional achievement and outstanding leadership and has received the Presidential Rank Award of Meritorious Executive for career Senior Executive Service (SES) members.

María Escudero Escribano is an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at the University of Copenhagen. Her group investigates tailored electrochemical interfaces for sustainable energy conversion and electrosynthesis of renewable fuels and chemicals. The research at her group combines electrochemical methods with in situ optical spectroscopy, microscopy, and in situ synchrotron-based characterisation techniques in order to understand the electrochemical interface at the atomic and molecular levels.

Become a Better Learner Workshop Series this Fall!
Online workshop series to help you this fall
Are you looking for strategies to tackle online learning? Do you want to build skills to improve your productivity? Are you looking to start each week with a little Monday Motivation? Join us for the six week Become a Better Learner workshop series that will set you up with STEM specific learning strategies, test-taking methods, an understanding of the power of learning our “failures” and that’s just the beginning!
The first workshop “Creating a Schedule for our Time” will take place on Monday, September 14th from 12-1PM. The other workshops will take place on 9/21, 9/28, 10/5, 10/12 and 10/19, all from 12-1PM. To learn more and/or to sign-up for each workshop visit their individual myUMBC event posts by clicking on each date.
We highly encourage participation from first and second year students, but welcome everyone that is interested in the workshop content.
Participants are not required to participate in all six workshops and can sign-up for discussions based on interest and availability.
Participants will be required to RSVP via the myUMBC event post prior to the workshop.
Access to the workshop link will be in each of the individual myUMBC posts.
