Important Announcement: RIU Transition Please read from an important update on our new program

Hello Mosaic, Interfaith, and Pride Center Community members,

As of July 1, 2020 Retriever Immigrants United became inactive as a student organization.However, we acknowledge the importance of supporting our fellow immigrant community members and wish to continue the good work set by previous RIU student leaders. 

We are delighted to announce that starting Fall 2020, RIU will transition over to The Mosaic, Interfaith, and Pride Centers as an ongoing discussion and support group self-identified immigrant students, as well as staff, faculty, and alumni. We are excited to see what new opportunities and connections this new iteration of RIU will bring to the UMBC immigrant community. Please note that this group is centers those who self-identify as first, 1.5, or second-generation immigrants regardless of race, ethnicity, nationality, or citizenship status. This is subject to change according to attendees and potential event opportunities and initiatives. See below for a list of definitions. 

As members of this page we encourage you to follow The Mosaic, Interfaith, and Pride Centers myUMBC group page to stay up to date with upcoming RIU discussion topics. Our current sessions are scheduled for 10/15/2020 (Link) and 12/15/2020 (Link).

The RIU myUMBC group page may become inactive in the following months. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to former RIU Advisor, Carlos Turcios at carlos6@umbc.edu.

Join us for a day of celebration of our immigrant communities!

UMBC Immigrant Recognition Day
Let’s come together as a community to recognize the contributions immigrants make every day to UMBC and our nation.

Students, Staff, Faculty, Service Workers, Administrators: Join us on Monday, October 7 for a day-long celebration on the Commons Quad**

Come when you can!

Regardless of where we were born, how we look or the language we speak, let’s pledge support to a strong, inclusive, safe UMBC for all.

We will share the many ways immigrants contribute to UMBC (and the U.S.).

Wear red to identify as part of (or in solidarity with) our community of immigrants.
Bring quotes, art, photos, texts—by immigrants or celebrating immigration—to display on our celebration wall.
Sign up for a 15-minute time slot to read—a poem, short story or excerpt by your favorite immigrant author;  sing;  play an instrument;  perform—spoken word, monologue, play;  or to share your own immigration stories. Sign up here. Additional creative celebratory ideas are welcome too!   

Use #UMBCimmigrants to document and celebrate immigrants’ contributions to our community. Participate, celebrate, and experience the beauty of our immigrant communities at UMBC by showing up, bringing your classes, inviting your friends.

I Rise for Those Who Are Too Scared to Speak Out


I’ve always known that I was different, my color, my culture, and my language didn’t follow the “American Norm.” My first language was Spanish and my parents were born in El Salvador. I experienced economic hardships at a young age and dealt with the constant fear of someone in my family being deported.


Growing up, my father was an undocumented immigrant so I was taught to keep quiet in fear of experiencing backlash towards my family. I was taught to stay silent and live life in the shadows.

As I got older, I found my voice, and felt more comfortable speaking out. I associated myself with people who were more vocal about social issues. When I started my sophomore year of highschool, I would fearlessly spoke up about Black Lives Matter and gender equality, but I still wouldn’t speak about immigrant rights. I felt obligated to protect my father at all costs; I didn’t want to lose him. One day he told me, “You’re Latina, you will face discrimination, encounter many trials, but you have a fighting spirit. Speak up and be my voice.” I felt comforted that I had my father’s blessing. I then started to be more vocal on immigrant issues and rights. I knew that I had to speak out and be his voice.


I rise when I see discrimination and inequality and I take a stand against any injustices. I rise for those who feel fear. I rise for those who don’t have a voice. I rise for those who live in the shadows. I rise for my father.
