UMBC SWE and Tau Beta Pi members got up early on Saturday, September 10 to participate in Wow! That's Engineering. The event was planned by the Baltimore Washington Chapter of SWE. Over 200 6th through 9th grade girls filled the Washington Convention Center!
The UMBC students helped in many parts of the event. Some were team leaders and directed groups of girls to the different activities and helped them to complete the engineering challenges. Some helped lead specific activities that included building roller coasters for marbles to demonstrate kinetic and potential energy. Every volunteer not only walked away with an awesome bright green t shirt but a positive volunteering experience.
Service events with a focus on engineering and IT education are fun and rewarding experiences not just for the younger kids who participate in them. Stay tuned for more SWE service events!
