Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.
During Summer 2021, I interned at Chesapeake Employers' Insurance Company as a Statistical Analysis intern. Chesapeake Employers' is Maryland's largest writer of workers' compensation insurance. They are a not-for-profit, non-stock, private corporation. I would generally pull numbers from company files and compile them all into an excel [sheet] making it easy for my supervisors to look through and see how they are doing with the companies they provide workers compensation for.
Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?
I often check UMBCworks for internship postings. I came across the job posting on UMBCworks and decided to apply.
What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?
I enjoyed being able to learn new skills and meet new people. I also enjoyed being able to use the skills I learned in ECON320 to help with the projects I was assigned.
How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?
Helping the company update expense constants and written premiums on companies they provide workers compensation for, making it easier for Chesapeake to see where they stand in numbers.
What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?
Always remember you are there to learn, don't be afraid to ask for help!

Scott Resource Group, a well-established university recruitment consulting firm, is partnering with selected career centers nationwide, including the University of Maryland Baltimore County, to conduct an important student recruiting research project. The findings of this study will influence how employers recruit students going forward [in-person? virtually? using a ‘hybrid’ approach?] – and this is your opportunity to weigh in on the impact of your job search experiences this semester.
The survey, ‘Reality Check: Candidate Attraction’ will take a deep-dive into this semester’s recruiting effectiveness – from the students’ perspective. Topics will include job boards, on-campus career fairs and events, virtual career fairs and events, third-party recruiting platforms – along with your assessment of the authenticity of your interaction with employers during your job search. The ultimate objective is to help employers and career centers to understand how students identify the opportunities they decide to pursue – and to assess the good, the bad, and the ugly specific to the myriad in-person and virtual job search channels, platforms and tools. The survey comprises both quantitative ratings and qualitative open-ended text questions, and the findings will be invaluable to those of us in the profession as we chart a course for the future of college student recruiting – which clearly has been upended these past 19 months.

Position Title: Brain Analytics and Machine Learning Researcher

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.
In my research at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab, I attended weekly trainings, meetings, and events. With the skills gained through training provided, I developed and improved artificial intelligence algorithms to automate the segmentation of brain data from X-ray microtomography. A more accurate diagnosis of brain diseases can be made with this tool, since it is able to identify multiple structures (e.g. cells, blood vessels, axons).
Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?
In an email from the UMBC Career Center, I learned that there was an opportunity for me to work on a research project at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab. As a result of signing up for the event with the Career Center, I learned more about the program, which I then applied to after determining that it aligned with my interests. Following the application process, I interviewed three times with the project lead.
What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?
Among the things I have enjoyed most about the project are the learning experience and joining a team of highly skilled scientists and researchers. I gained a profound understanding of the field of neuroscience and its integration with machine learning.
How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?
As a part of this project, I developed algorithms of neural networks that can distinguish microstructures on an x-ray image, which resulted in segmenting brain structures more efficiently and reducing human bias, reducing the cost, and improving clinical diagnostic accuracy.
What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?
Ensure you are applying for internships within the fields in which you see yourself working for the rest of your life. Putting all those skills gained during your academic career to work would give you an idea of what it would be like. Continually follow the internship training, and never miss a training session. Do not give up, stay committed.

Thanks to the Career Center, I was able to have such an incredible experience and gain such valuable information. I was able to learn more about this opportunity, and how I can gain more of this research program at UMBC. An internship is a great way to gain hands-on skills in your field of interest and establish professional contacts.
