My role primarily involved collaborating, attending team meetings, networking, and learning different skills. I was continuously learning and developing new skills related to data management and Power BI, which were essential for my role. A very important part of my internship was networking. BGE organized events which allowed me to meet people ranging from those who work in the field to the company CEO. Building professional relationships within the organization allowed me to learn from experienced colleagues and mentors.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

The process of obtaining my position was fairly smooth. I first learned about the opportunity at a scholars event held in October. During the event, I had the chance to connect with representatives from the organization and gain a deeper understanding of the role and its requirements. Intrigued by the position, I decided to submit my resume shortly after the event. In January, I received a positive response, and I was invited to participate in a phone interview. This interview served as an important step in the selection process, allowing me to discuss my qualifications, experiences, and enthusiasm for the position with the hiring team.

What resources did you use to find your current experience?

Student Organizations/Scholar Groups

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?

During my internship at BGE, I had the opportunity to work with the contract management group, and what I enjoyed most about my position and the organization was the chance to gain hands-on experience in the corporate field. It allowed me to apply the theoretical knowledge I had acquired in my studies to real-world situations. Additionally, I appreciated the supportive and collaborative environment at BGE, where I had the chance to learn from experienced professionals who were always willing to mentor and guide me. Overall, the combination of practical experience and the positive work culture made my time at BGE both enjoyable and educational.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

During my internship at BGE, I believe I made a meaningful impact through my involvement in organizing the safety expo. This event played a crucial role in promoting safety awareness and best practices within the organization. By coordinating various aspects of the expo, such as planning the schedule, arranging informative sessions, and ensuring the event ran smoothly, I helped create an environment where employees and contractors could learn and engage with safety topics.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

The advice I would give another student who is seeking an internship is to utilize their personal and professional networks to seek out potential internship leads. Attend career fairs, join relevant student organizations, and connect with professionals on platforms like LinkedIn.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.

My internship not only allowed me to apply classroom knowledge to the real world but also opened doors to new experiences and connections. I went into the office maybe less than 5 times throughout my 10-week internship. My day-to-day responsibilities included: cleaning up Purchase Order Histories, renewing/following up with C832 forms for Suppliers, attending virtual meetings for weekly/quarterly performances/goals, creating a Planner Guide, and emailing/calling to coworkers about status of items.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

It all started at the UMBC Career Fair in Fall 2022. I dressed up in a suit with a laptop case bag with resumes inside and a pool cue billiard case. I heard from the Resume Help workshop that Northrop Grumman was a Gold Hire, which means they hire a lot of students from UMBC. The first stall I visited was them, and I got really lucky that I was one of the first ones in line. NG had two more career events that I attended and networked with the same person I saw at the fair. From there, she told me to apply to any positions that interest me. There were no internships, only full time positions, and I got rejected from them. Fortunately, in that rejection letter, they told me it's because I'm a student that cannot work full time hours but that they'd take me in as an intern, which they sent me a link for to submit an application. And I got accepted.

What resources did you use to find your current experience?

UMBC Career Center, Career Fairs, Networking events (UMBC Connects, Info Sessions, Arts With a Purpose, etc.)

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?

I loved that it was remote and the feeling of job security post grad.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I believe I made an impact by cleaning up old issues that no one wanted to fix because everyone is focused on cleaning up current issues instead of issues from the past.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Put your best foot forward. First impressions are everything. Dress to impress. I also got lucky because the person who scouted me and is my current manager used to be a state champ billiards pool player (I think) so when she saw my billiards case + my attire + my resume + my professionalism got my foot in the door. From there, be personable. Smile, laugh, engage.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.

You might think the Career Center won’t help much, but their help can get you closer to landing an internship/job. Working closely with the Program Coordinator, my active contribution to co-leading the Dawg Days: Jumpstart (Summer Bridge program) gave me an opportunity to guide a cohort comprising of more than 60 new students through a six-week journey consisting of rigorous academic coursework, invaluable career exploration sessions, fostering community building exercises, and engaging in enriching service-learning opportunities. On a weekly basis, my esteemed colleague and I were presented with new and exciting challenges as we embarked on the creation of innovative workshops designed to facilitate the academic transition of students. In addition to these endeavors, we also organized impactful co-curricular events, including social gatherings, field trips, and service-learning programs. The overarching goal of these initiatives was to foster personal growth and make a positive impact on the UMBC community.

Additionally, we made it our priority to establish an inclusive study hall environment within our university's library to ensure students felt supported throughout their individual educational journeys. I collaborated with faculty from various disciplines to coordinate class activities and ensure a cohesive academic experience. Furthermore, I helped peer mentors facilitate workshops for AETP. Another important aspect of my role was providing essential academic guidance to freshman students, helping them navigate their educational journey at UMBC. Through these efforts, I strive to create an inclusive and comprehensive learning environment that fosters growth and success for new students.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

The AETP program coordinator emailed the graduate directors regarding the position with detailed information. I emailed my resume along with a brief expression of my interest and was selected for an interview. Following a successful in-person interview, I received an offer from the program coordinator to join the position.

What resources did you use to find your current experience?

Networking events (UMBC Connects, Info Sessions, Arts With a Purpose, etc.)

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?

My ultimate goal is to become a faculty member in my area of expertise within academia. I have thoroughly enjoyed my current position and have had the privilege of working for the new student community. Working alongside the UMBC community has been a major accomplishment for me, especially in collaborating with those involved in AETP. This internship has provided valuable insight into my future endeavors with my degree.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

Each day, I was engaged in conversations with summer bridge program students from various undergraduate majors, encouraging them to advocate for diversity and inclusion within the academic sphere. I helped freshmen become a part of the UMBC community. I am committed to creating a positive and impactful academic environment that fosters growth and success for all students through various initiatives such as research, academic success, and future job guidelines.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

If you are looking for internships, my advice is to focus your research on your areas of expertise. You can start by checking a company's website for any open positions, or look on job search platforms like LinkedIn, Indeed, and ZipRecruiter. However, the most helpful resources are Handshake and the Career Center, which can connect you with companies and provide access to internship opportunities. Another great option is to search on Google with the keyword "Google Jobs" to find a variety of internship opportunities in your field of expertise, as well as your preferred location and date posted. By using these methods, you can effectively find internships that match your skills and interests.

Never lose hope!

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.

If you're looking to create a CV or resume and an impactful cover letter, the Career Center is always here to help. The Career Center will offer guidance on how to present your unique strengths and experiences in a way that captures the attention of potential employers.

Do you want the chance to be the next Intern of the Week? Fill out this form to be considered!

Intern of the Week: Allie Smith

<Tagline>Check out Allie Smith's Internship with T. Rowe Price</Tagline>

Name: Allie Smith

Pronouns: She/Her/Hers

Semester of Internship: Summer 2023

Major: BTA

Current Class Level: Senior

This semester I completed a(n)...: Internship

Internship, Co-op, or Research Site (Company/Organization Name): T. Rowe Price

Location of the Organization (City, State): Baltimore, MD

Title of position: Intern with the GCAS department

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities:

I interned within the Global Client Account Services (GCAS) department within T. Rowe Price. Within this department I worked in the strategy and planning team, which does a mix of business admin and data management work to support all of GCAS globally. This team aligned perfectly with my BTA major since I was able to do work with both the business side and the technology side. Most of my day to day responsibilities included working on my projects. I can't get into specifics, but I was able to create a best practice guide for social media use for all of GCAS that I was able to present to our London, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore, and North America locations. I also conducted a technology review to determine the tech that GCAS associates have in and out of the office. With this review I was then able to work on a "tech starter pack" for new GCAS associates based on title and level. On the data side I worked on a project with Power BI to create a visual dashboard for managers to get multiple different views of their processes in order to see room for improvement. This is a project that I am still currently working on since my team asked me to stay on until the end of the year.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I heard about the internship positions at T. Rowe from an event that UMBC had. It was towards the beginning of the semester last year, they had an event where T. Rowe employees and previous interns came in to share their experiences and discussed the different internship opportunities. From here I applied online for an internship, and went through a series of online interviews in order to obtain the internship.

What resources did you use to find your current experience?

Networking events (UMBC Connects, Info Sessions, Arts With a Purpose, etc.)

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?

I have enjoyed the networking opportunities because I was able to learn more about T. Rowe and the investment industry through the eyes of different associates with different backgrounds. I also enjoyed that I was given meaningful work and projects where I was able to learn things that related to my major and interests.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I believe that my work has been impactful for the GCAS department because I aided in creating a social media best practices document that is housed on the landing page for all associates to see globally. Also my technology review aided the department so that the lead team is aware of what technology GCAS associates have and gives them a better way of looking at that information. And also through the dashboard that I created, this will be something that GCAS managers will actively use to visualize trends within their processes to see room for improvement. Overall, the work I was given was meaningful and are things that the department will benefit from having.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Don't be scared to apply. I was hesitant at first to apply to an internship within the investment industry because it was an industry I did not have a lot of knowledge on. But I was still able to get this internship with my current interests, and then I was able to learn more about a field I may have never gotten the opportunity to learn about.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.

Two of the main things that I learned from this internship that I will take with me wherever I go next in my career / education are the importance of continuous learning and the importance of networking and communicating with new people.

Do you want the chance to be the next Intern of the Week? Fill out this form to be considered!
