SWEet Summer Presents: Safania Romas

Safania Romas (UMBC '18, Chemical Engineering, traditional track) is interning for the Guardian Pharmaceuticals branch in Singapore. She has been given the fantastic opportunity to apply her knowledge of chemistry into her work in the creation of certain medications, provide customer service (especially since she loves interacting with people), and lend a helping hand. When she is not working, she enjoys excursions to neighboring countries such as Malaysia or Indonesia. She has seen that foreign countries operate differently than the United States and this has helped to broaden her mind and it gives her a new perspective on what it means to be an international engineer or scientist. She likes to tell her peers to break out of their comfort zone and experience new horizons. She also likes to tell people to work at their own pace, gain inspiration, and be open to learning new ideas. She believes that these are the steps to making a great impact on the world.

PAID Fall Internship Opportunities

Dear SWEethearts,
As we are nearing the academic school year, there have been some great internship opportunities that may be for you! Please read below for more information.

1. Kids in the Kitchen: Interns will teach bi-weekly cooking sessions of Kids in the Kitchen, a program at Paul's Place where students in the after-school program prepare and cook meals to take home to their families. Interns will be mentored by the KiK coordinator, they will participate in an orientation session in early September to learn about the program, and then each week will be expected to review and know the lesson and recipe so that they can guide the volunteers and students in the successful making of the recipe. KiK sessions happen twice a month, and interns should pick one day of the week and commit to coming to all of the sessions on that day. Interns should be responsible, have some experience teaching, have a passion for cooking and nutrition, and a desire to learn. Interns will be paid a $250 stipend; Paul's Place is happy to work with university students who want to receive credit for this internship. Prospective interns should submit a resume and cover letter detailing why they are interested in participating in the program. Interviews will be conducted in late August.

Mondays: Sept 21, Oct 5, Oct 19, Nov 9, Nov 16, Dec 7

Tuesdays: Sept 22 ,Oct 6, Oct 20, Nov 10, Nov 17, Dec 8

Wednesdays: Sept 23, Oct 6, Oct 21, Nov 10, Nov 18, Dec 9

Thursdays: Sept 24, Oct 6, Oct 21, Nov 10, Nov 18, Dec 9

The hours are 2-7pm each of the days listed above.

Please submit resumes to Charlotte Keniston cskeniston@gmail.com

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2. STEM Fellows to facilitate After-School Program activities at Lakeland Elementary: Specific responsibilities include: 1) Facilitating all aspects of the program (homework help, academic and enrichment activities, transitions between activities); 2) Collaborating with Lakeland teachers in the planning and delivery of academic activities; 3) Leading one enrichment activity per week (i.e. sport; robotics; chess; performance arts) (tentative); 4) Supervising volunteers (UMBC students); 5) Serving as a “real” model to YE Scholars.

These positions require a time commitment of 8 hours per week. Fellows must be available Monday and Wednesday OR Tuesday and Thursday (days can be flexible though) from 2:45-6:00pm.
SWEet Summer Presents: Stacy Sumedi

Stacy Sumedi (Mechanical Engineer, UMBC '15) "I just completed my second week as an Associate Engineer in the Smart Grid Operations Department of BGE (Baltimore Gas & Electric). This department is responsible for maintaining the system that reads all BGE customers' electric and gas meters, also known as the "smart grid." As an engineer, I have been working closely with analysts to identify areas in the BGE territory that are experiencing issues with their meters while prioritizing these problematic zones to have them fixed. Since I'm still new, I'm learning about the company everyday and take every chance I get to meet other employees in different departments. I recently had the opportunity to go into the field and ride along with a meter inspector who showed me how they install, fix, and replace smart meters (seen in picture) for commercial and residential customers. This hands on experience allowed me to really understand what I was working on inside of the office. As for the future, I'm not really sure where I'm going to end up, but I'm currently preparing to take the Mechanical FE Exam in the fall to eventually become a licensed PE. I also plan to start pursuing an MBA sometime in 2016. With this wide range of expertise, I hope to broaden my opportunities for the career I have ahead of me." We wish Stacy the best of luck in the real world and the best on her future!

SWEet Summer Presents: Mona Patel

Mona Patel (UMBC ‘17, Chemical Engineering-Bio Track) is interning at MedImmune this summer. She is “developing a new derouging mapping program and writing my own SOP (standard operating procedure). I will also be the first author of the SOP and my program will be used in the field starting in September. Hopefully, I'll get to present my work at the national conference in October if my abstract gets approved by nationals.” In addition to that, as SWE president, she is working hard and trying to coordinate a time so that SWE at UMBC can invite Miss America 2014, Nina Dulvuri @realninad. She wants to fight the stereotype that is attached to women in engineering. Mona wants to pursue both her dreams and passion to be an engineer and a model #UseYourAnd. She is still learning the ropes and getting comfortable in the engineering field, but in the future, she hopes that she can fulfill her dreams by using her engineering skills and knowledge in the world of prosthetics. Her favorite quote is “we must become the change we wish to see in the world”, so let us keep that in mind and we should take action NOW to reach our hopes and dreams!

Scholars Program in Seattle, WA! For eight weeks, I will explore the city and
surrounding areas while learning about conservation, diversity, identity, and
about how to become an environmental change-agent. I am so grateful to be able
to pursue my passions for both travel and environmental conservation! I am also
taking an online Poetry and Fiction course, which will count for my minor in
English on the Creative Writing track. I aspire to someday publish my work (and
in the ear future, in UMBC’s Bartleby Creative Journal)." She hopes
"to combine my interests in technology, sustainability, and creativity by
becoming an environmental engineer. I want to devise creative solutions to environmental
issues, especially those connected to renewable energy. This program will be a
great stepping-stone to do so in terms of gaining knowledge that will alter my
perspectives, a network of people with similar passions, and personal and
professional mentorship. Moreover, the class will provide me with a structured
outlet to develop my creativity and writing skills."

If you haven't submitted a photo for the SWEet Summer Photo,

One tip she gives is "to never give up! Just as the saying goes, 'if you

Please look at our previous post for the questions. It's SWEet and short, it'll
take you only a few minutes!
