With over 1,000 institutions of higher education across the globe, the AASHE STARS report is one of the main tools available to sustainability professionals. For many institutions, the STARS report serves as a metric of sustainability progress and a source of new ideas and methods, while GIS provides a platform to display information within a context of systems, places, or times. Interactive web GIS allows for digital storytelling and can allow the user to explore specific information pertinent to their interests. This research explores potential links between the use of web GIS platforms and levels of campus engagement as measured by STARS.

Keywords: GIS, Web GIS, Engagement, STARS, Higher Education

About The Journal of Sustainability Education

The Journal of Sustainability Education (JSE) serves as a forum for academics and practitioners to share, critique, and promote research, practices, and initiatives that foster the integration of economic, ecological, and social-cultural dimensions of sustainability within formal and non-formal educational contexts.

JSE is a peer-reviewed, open access trans- and interdisciplinary e-journal. Each issue will include research and practice feature articles, professional and news reports of projects and initiatives, opinion pieces, announcements of educational and research opportunities, and book and other media reviews. JSE encourages submissions from educators active in a wide variety of settings: public and private K-12 schools; higher education; early childhood education; environmental, outdoor and experiential education; community organizing and education; residential and nonresidential treatment and therapy programs; as well as informal and non-traditional educators. We particularly welcome alternative media submissions.

JSE publishes three editions a year: two themed issues and one general edition. Publications generally are released in December, February, and March. We welcome suggestions for upcoming themes. Please contact the editor directly with your ideas or questions: Clare Hintz, Ph.D., editor (at) susted (dot) com.

JSE is housed by: The Prescott College PhD Program in Sustainability Education.

Campus Race to Zero Waste 2022

The Campus Race to Zero Waste is a friendly competition and
benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs to promote
waste reduction activities to their campus communities. Over an 8-week period
each spring, colleges across the United States and Canada report the amount of
recycling and trash collected each week and are in turn ranked in various
categories based on who recycles the most on a per capita basis, as well as
which schools have the best recycling rate as a percentage of total waste and
which schools generate the least amount of combined trash and recycling.
With each week’s updated ranking, participating schools follow their
performance against other colleges and use the results to rally their campus to
    reduce and recycle more.

National recognition is provided to the winning school in
each category on the website and in a national press release. Winning schools
receive an award made out of recyclable materials, and win the right to host
that category’s special traveling trophy for the coming year.

UMBC to Pursue Plastics Reduction Partner Program

<Tagline>National Wildlife Federation & Campus Race to Zero Waste</Tagline>

The National Wildlife Federation and the Campus Race to Zero
Waste Program is excited to announce a new certification program for colleges
and universities taking action to reduce the purchase and use of plastics on
    campus.

There are three levels of certification:

Bronze (18-48 points): Introductory badge - your college or
university is newer to the plastics reduction space, and trying to get the word
out about the need for change.

**Silver (49-74 points): Intermediate badge - your college
or university is reducing plastics in practice, and your impact is visible
    campus-wide.

Green (75-100 points): Advanced level badge - your college
or university is institutionally committed, and demonstrating leadership in the
plastics reduction space as a true change agent.

**UMBC is working towards the Silver
    designation

More Information about the Plastics
    Reduction Partner Program:

The Plastics Reduction Partner program is on a three-year
cycle to integrate into action and reporting associated with AASHE STARS
processes. Campuses will be asked to re-apply for certification every three
years to remain current, and your three year date is determined by the month
and year of your last submission.

Campuses are encouraged to review the action and
documentation requirements for the next certification level regularly to
determine if you are eligible for the next level of certification. Campuses can
apply for the next level of certification at any time, they do not have to wait
three years. The Plastics Reduction Partner program is eligible for AASHE
    STARS innovation credits.
