Curriculum development workshop for faculty wishing to integrate topics of environmental sustainability into their courses
Faculty from all disciplines are welcome to apply – we encourage diverse perspectives! Participants will receive a stipend.

This workshop is provided with support from the Office of the Provost and a BreakingGround Community Building Grant.

The workshop will offer concepts, detailed examples, and materials useful for developing engaging new course content across the disciplines. Participants will collaborate to develop innovative course components that inspire critical thinking in students and address pressing environmental issues.
Workshop facilitators and guest presenters will share a range of models and resources for designing content that will engage students with locally relevant issues, generate innovative research, and encourage active ecological citizenship on campus and beyond.
The ability to think critically and problem-solve around sustainability is an increasingly essential and sought-after skill. We can empower our students to examine and address real concerns, through every disciplinary lens.
Workshop Facilitators:
Rita Turner(Ph.D., UMBC) teaches for American Studies and Media and Communication Studies. Turner’s research looks at interdisciplinary environmental education and the social foundations of environmental problems. Turner has developed curriculum materials for addressing questions of sustainability and has led faculty workshops on teaching sustainability across content areas. | Steven McAlpine(Ed.M., Harvard) is assistant director of the Interdisciplinary Studies Program, teaches upper-level interdisciplinary courses, and has done extensive research on interdisciplinary education and scholarship. In summer 2012 McAlpine conducted a successful workshop for UMBC faculty from various disciplines in order to foster interdisciplinary teaching. | Tanvi Gadhia(M.S. Candidate, Johns Hopkins) is UMBC’s Environmental Sustainability Coordinator, and has an extensive background in environmental education, research, policy advocacy and organizing. Gadhia has worked at the regional, national and international levels on issues ranging from agricultural food systems to clean energy and climate change. |
