The scholarship application is fairly short (see questions below), and preference is given to students with demonstrated financial need and students applying to UMBC faculty-led or exchange programs.

2. How will your chosen study abroad program and choice of location impact your academic career at UMBC and your professional career upon graduation?
3. While the CAHSS Dean’s Scholarship will help to relieve some of the financial burden associated with studying abroad, it is not meant to cover all costs associated with your study abroad experience. Describe how you plan to fund the remaining expenses involved in your study abroad program.

Description

Philosophy of Humor - What makes something funny? Can humor be defined and understood? If so, how? This summer, explore these questions and more in PHIL 369, as you examine various psychological and philosophical theories of humor and the causes of laughter. Examples from different media, including stand-up comedy, podcasts, television, and film, will be used to test competing theories.

"I try to change the content up a little every time I teach the course," says professor James Thomas, "but I will show clips from Dave Chappelle, Norm MacDonald, Buster Keaton, Chris Rock, Jim Gaffigan, Anthony Jeselnik, and John Mulaney. There will probably be some Monty Python and SNL stuff in there as well." 

Special attention will be paid to the ethical implications of offensive humor. Readings will be drawn from historical and contemporary sources, such as Charles Portis, Philip Roth, Kurt Vonnegut, and Paul Beatty.

PHIL 369 fulfills the Arts & Humanities GEP requirement.

PHIL 100 – Introduction to Philosophy explores these questions (and more!) with an introduction to fundamental philosophical concepts and methods. Discuss intriguing topics such as the existence and nature of God, the relationship between mind and body, personal identity, the relationship between free will and determinism, moral responsibility, the nature and possibility of knowledge, causality and the nature of reality.

Offered as a 4-week Hybrid Course during Winter Session 2018, PHIL 100 emphasizes the formulation and evaluation of philosophical arguments, and may draw upon historical as well as contemporary readings.  PHIL 100 also fulfills an Arts & Humanities GEP.
