So much of our modern history originates from the past, and Roman history has been among the most influential to our world. "Here in the United States, our system of government is modeled on ancient Athenian democracy, the ancient Roman Republic, and the ancient Germanic alþing or folcgemōt," writes Spencer Alexander McDaniel. And then there's architecture, literature, art, and religion - all have ties to the ancient Roman world. "Even the way we think has its origins in distant antiquity," says McDaniel. 

It's safe to say that we would not be who we are today if it weren't for the ancient Romans. But just how much do you know about The Roman World?

Covering nearly a thousand years of Roman history, ANCS 202 will introduce students to aspects of Roman civilization, such as art and literature, religion and magic, domestic and foreign politics, gender and sexuality. Key Roman historical figures, events, and institutions will come alive in the accounts in translation of ancient authors.

ANCS 202 is a HYBRID course that fulfills the Arts & Humanities and Culture GEP requirements.

Description

Law & Order: Ancient Rome - You have probably heard that modern legal systems owe much to the laws of Ancient Rome. But what did those laws actually look like? How did the courts run? How would you have gone about seeking justice if you were the victim of a crime? What sorts of punishments might you face if your case went poorly? Who benefited from this way of resolving conflict, and who was at a disadvantage? Who enforced the law? Was it fair? Was it comprehensive? What can it tell us about the way modern justice systems work? This class will explore the legal system of Ancient Rome through studying ancient cases, comparing modern legal principals to ancient, and simulating Roman-style trials. We will cover tort, family, and criminal law, litigation procedures, fines, and punishments within the social context of the Roman Empire.

“Magic’s about understanding – and then manipulating – how viewers digest the sensory information.” – Teller

Long before David Copperfield, Harry Potter, and Gandolf, there was Magic and Witchcraft in the Ancient World.

This January, ANCS 350 offers you the chance to explore the ancient Greek and Roman roots of modern supernatural/paranormal legends (demons, ghosts, vampires, and werewolves) and discover how those in Ancient Mediterranean used magic to protect themselves from supernatural attacks.  

Examine age-old uses of daily practical magic and curses, as well as how astrology, dream-interpretation, and fortune telling contributed to the development of medicine and philosophy.

You’ll even have the opportunity to create your own curse tablet and a baked-clay amulet!

ANCS 350 is a hybrid course that combines online discussion/writing with in-class lectures and activities.

Get to know the Instructor:

Dr. Molly Jones-Lewis is a social and cultural historian of ancient medicine. She received her Bachelor of Arts with Honors from Swarthmore College in 2003, and earned her Masters in 2006 and her Ph.D in 2009, from The Ohio State University. Her research is oriented around the ways in which doctors and medical theories functioned in the Roman Empire. Some of her ongoing projects focus on theories of ethnicity, the doctor in Roman law and the making and popularization of Eunuchs in Rome. In her spare time, Dr. Jones-Lewis loves to knit, spin yarn, play a baroque recorder as well as spoil her cats.
