Featured Course: Community in America (AMST 380) AMST 380 Fulfills to Arts & Humanities GEP

Description

Community in America - This summer, take advantage of a unique opportunity to document the stories and experiences of Nepali community members who have made Baltimore home while earning valuable credits. The Baltimore Field School: Documenting Stories of Migration represents a new collaboration between the American Folklife Center (AFC) at the Library of Congress and UMBC. Structured as an ethnographic field school, AMST 380 is a hands-on, practice-based course for students passionate about community collaboration and engagement.   

Learn to conduct in-depth interviews with refugee community members, audio record the interviews, as well as the basics of photographic documentation and archiving resultant documentation. Students’ documented interviews and photographs may be preserved in the AFC Archives for future public and research access.

Classes will be held at the Lion Brothers Building in downtown Baltimore, with fieldwork occurring mainly in other areas of the city.

Description

Philosophy of Humor - What makes something funny? Can humor be defined and understood? If so, how? This summer, explore these questions and more in PHIL 369, as you examine various psychological and philosophical theories of humor and the causes of laughter. Examples from different media, including stand-up comedy, podcasts, television, and film, will be used to test competing theories.

"I try to change the content up a little every time I teach the course," says professor James Thomas, "but I will show clips from Dave Chappelle, Norm MacDonald, Buster Keaton, Chris Rock, Jim Gaffigan, Anthony Jeselnik, and John Mulaney. There will probably be some Monty Python and SNL stuff in there as well." 

Special attention will be paid to the ethical implications of offensive humor. Readings will be drawn from historical and contemporary sources, such as Charles Portis, Philip Roth, Kurt Vonnegut, and Paul Beatty.

PHIL 369 fulfills the Arts & Humanities GEP requirement.

Description

Law & Order: Ancient Rome - You have probably heard that modern legal systems owe much to the laws of Ancient Rome. But what did those laws actually look like? How did the courts run? How would you have gone about seeking justice if you were the victim of a crime? What sorts of punishments might you face if your case went poorly? Who benefited from this way of resolving conflict, and who was at a disadvantage? Who enforced the law? Was it fair? Was it comprehensive? What can it tell us about the way modern justice systems work? This class will explore the legal system of Ancient Rome through studying ancient cases, comparing modern legal principals to ancient, and simulating Roman-style trials. We will cover tort, family, and criminal law, litigation procedures, fines, and punishments within the social context of the Roman Empire.
