Course Overview
Poland—the country that sparked the fall of communism in Europe—becomes a laboratory to study democratization and nation-building.
POLI 372 traces modern Poland’s tragic path from multiculturalism to ethnic homogeneity, as well as its triumphant path from imperial subject to independent state. The program includes visits to sites in Krakow, Gdansk and Warsaw and illuminates the historical and cultural factors that have helped create the current democratic Polish nation.
The program is led by Dr. Brian Grodsky, an expert on democratization and human rights, who has spent several years in Poland as a researcher, reporter, and U.S. diplomat.
The Country
Poland offers a number of natural attractions, from beaches on the Baltic coast and expansive lakes in the north, to the beautiful Tatry mountains in the south. Students will also have opportunities to travel outside of class.
Students from all majors are encouraged to apply.
