The rapid growth of the nation’s Latino community has sparked
heated national debate over immigration, yet the reality is that many of us
know little about the Latin American roots of migration. In this talk, based on
his award-winning documentary, Harvest of Empire, Eduardo López examines
the direct connection between the long history of U.S. intervention in Latin

Congratulations to Political Science and Global Studies professor Felipe Filomeno, who has been awarded the Early Career Prize of the Economics & Politics Section of the Latin American Studies Association. He won the award in recognition of his 2014 article in the Journal of Comparative Politics, "Patterns of Rule-Making and Intellectual Property Regimes: Lessons from South American Soybean Agriculture." Below is a summary Dr. Filomeno's article:

Around 1980, states and corporations from core countries led by the U.S. government started to demand from other countries reforms that increased the scope and strength of private intellectual property rights. The resulting global upward rachet of intellectual property protection has not developed uniformly across time and space. This study presents a theory of cross-national variation in intellectual property regimes based on a comparative-historical analysis of the making of intellectual property rules in South American soybean agriculture (Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay). It concludes that a corporatist pattern of rule-making is conducive to weak intellectual property regime (Argentina), whereas pluralism (Brazil) and state capture and abstention (Paraguay) are more conducive to strong intellectual property regimes.

That’s why we are launching the Global Zero Action Corps, designed to mobilize all-star activists across the country to help us tackle the single biggest security threat of our generation.

About the Action Corps

Starting in early 2015, the Global Zero will bring together 50 of the country’s top young volunteer advocates, ages 18 - 35, for the first ever class of Global Zero Action Corps. During their 1-year service, Action Corps leaders will mobilize their peers, lead creative campaigns, and apply real pressure on policymakers to eliminate all nuclear weapons, everywhere. Equipped with unparalleled access to training, resources, and movement leaders, the Action Corps leaders will be on the front lines of the fight for a better, safe future.

The Action Corps will also have the opportunity to travel to New York City with Global Zero this spring for three days of high level training and action -- alongside some of the world’s most prominent leaders in the field of international security.
Bard College's Asian/Environment Student Research Conference

<Tagline>Now accepting paper and poster proposals!</Tagline>

Undergraduate and graduate students engaged in research related to Asia and the environment are invited to submit posters and papers for presentation at the first in a series of annual conferences.

Today it is impossible to think seriously about the challenges of sustainable development and the environment without understanding the local and global environmental footprint of rapid economic growth in Asia—and the Asian response. At the same time, Asian Studies students increasingly require familiarity with the scientific, cultural and political dimensions of environmental crises and sustainable development.

With the support of the Henry Luce Foundation, Bard College is sponsoring an annual student research conference, providing a venue for students to present undergraduate, masters and PhD level research at the intersection of these critical issues. The conference seeks to shed critical light on how we all might live sustainably—or not—in a 2050 world with three billion more people, limited resources, a thickening blanket of carbon dioxide heating the planet, and a global economic development process increasingly defined by Asian models and leadership.

The conference will be held on the campus of Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, NY, which is easily accessible by train from New York City. Registration is $30, and housing and meals will be provided for student participants. Meals are included for non-student registrants. The conference will begin at 4 PM on Thursday, April 16, and end at 9 PM on Friday, April 17.

To submit a paper for a panel, or a proposal for a poster presentation, please send a one paragraph abstract to Env-Asia@bard.edu. Undergraduate students must also include a letter of support from a professor.
