<Title>STA Travel Start the Adventure Scholarship: Deadline 11/6/15</Title>
<Tagline>A scholarship value of $2,500!</Tagline>

    <div class="html-content"><span>The Start the Adventure Scholarship was born out of a desire by STA Travel to recognize both student and institution. Thus, $2500 is awarded to a deserving student and a matching donation of $2500 is made to the student's home university or college to award to an additional student of their choice for study abroad, thereby making each scholarship twice as powerful.</span><br><br><span>The STA Travel Start the Adventure timeline for students who will begin their study abroad programs between January and June 2016 is as follows:</span><br><br><span>Application Opens: Monday, October 12, 2015 (before 5 PM MDT)</span><br><br><span>Application Deadline: Friday, November 6, 2015, 5 PM MDT</span><br><br><span>Award Announced: Wednesday, December 30, 2015 (before 5 PM MDT, subject to change)</span><br><br><span>Applications for the award will take place through the regular FGS application channel at the link below:</span><br><a href="https://www.fgscholars.org/sta-start-the-adventure-scholarship/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">https://www.fgscholars.org/sta-start-the-adventure-scholarship/</a><br><br><span>The top three applicants will be interviewed by STA Travel staff.  Applicants should be:</span><br><br><span>1. <Title>Japanese Bridging Scholarship</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span>The Bridging Scholarship program will award 25 scholarships to American students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan that begin in Spring 2016. Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study and attending any recognized exchange or independent program in Japan are eligible to apply for these scholarships.</span><br><br><span>Recipients of Bridging Scholarships will receive stipends of $2,500 or $4,000, depending on the length of their study program in Japan. The scholarships are funded by donations from U.S. corporations and foundations to the US-Japan Bridging Foundation. Since 1999, the Bridging Scholarship program has awarded more than 1,550 scholarships to students studying abroad in Japan. Most recently, 75 students from colleges and universities in 34 states received scholarships for study in Japan in the Fall 2015 semester.</span><br><br><span>Spring 2016 study programs are those beginning between January and April 2016 and continuing for at least three months, for a semester or an academic year. Bridging Scholarships are not awarded for summer-only study programs.</span><br><br><span>The deadline for applications for Spring 2016 scholarships is October 8, 2015. Applicants will be notified of the results by November 30. Selection will be based on academic potential and financial need. <Title>Study Abroad Walk-in Hours</Title>

    <div class="html-content">Just a gentle reminder to all UMBC students about education abroad advising. The staff of the Study Abroad Office is happy to help students plan for the academic program overseas that best meets their academic needs and geographic interests. We do so during our regularly scheduled walk-in advising hours. We can see students during these hours <strong>only</strong>. <div><br></div><div>We also want to gently remind you that all students must attend a session of Study Abroad 101 prior to coming to walk-in hours. These sessions are held twice a week, every week, throughout the semester. They are held on Mondays at noon, Thursdays at 3:00 pm in 218 Administration. </div><div><br></div><div>If you have just a quick question, it is far better to e-mail the Study Abroad Office at &lt;sao [at] umbc [dot] edu&gt;.     <div class="html-content"><div><img src="http://globalstudies.umbc.edu/files/2015/08/22.png" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"></div><h5><span>Tania Lizarazo, Ph.D., <em>MLLI / GLBL</em></span></h5><div><br></div><div>Tania Lizarazo received her Ph.D. in Latin American Literature and Cultures, with emphases in Feminist Theory &amp; Research and Studies in Performance &amp; Practice from the University of California, Davis in 2015. Her research interests include digital storytelling, Latin American cultural studies, transnational feminisms and memory studies. Her recent digital storytelling projects are a collaboration with the Gender Committee of a farmers' organization from the Colombian Pacific: <a href="http://www.mujerespacificas.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">mujerespacficas.org</a> and a collaboration with members of farm working communities in Calitfornia's Central Valley: <a href="http://sexualidadescampesinas.ucdavis.edu/en/about-the-project/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">sexualidadescampesinas.ucdavis.edu</a><span>.</span></div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><img src="http://globalstudies.umbc.edu/files/2015/08/11.png" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"></div><h5>Asif Majid, M.A., <em>GLBL / INDS</em></h5><div><br></div><div>Asif Majid teaches courses in the Global Studies and Interdisciplinary Studies programs at UMBC. His research focuses on the ways in which conflict and the performing arts overlap. He is an alumnus of UMBC where he received his B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies in 2013. After his undergraduate work at UMBC, Asif went on to graduate school at Georgetown University and received his M.A. in 2015.     <div class="html-content"><div>The Shriver Center coordinates this undergraduate scholarship program, funded by the <strong>France-Merrick Foundation</strong>. Now in it's 20th year, this scholarship is available for students who demonstrate an exemplary commitment to service, leadership, and civic engagement on the UMBC campus and in Baltimore City. The France-Merrick Scholarship Program seeks to combine service and reflection, build relationships, and strengthen networks to affect meaningful change.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>Fellows</strong> are awarded a scholarship that goes toward tuition, mandatory fees, and room and board expenses. This will not exceed $15,000 for Maryland students, $22,000 for out-of-state students. In 2015-16, Fellows will engage in service connected with Baltimore City; serve in leadership roles (which includes convening meetings for the France-Merrick Scholarship Program), support meaningful professional development, and serve as ambassadors of service at UMBC. For 2015-16, <strong>two Fellows</strong> will be selected. </div><div><br></div><div><strong>Scholars</strong> are awarded a scholarship of up to $1,500. In 2015-16, Scholars will engage in service <span>connected with Baltimore City; </span><span>support meaningful professional development, participate in meetings, and serve as ambassadors of service at UMBC. For 2015-16, <strong>five Scholars</strong> will be selected.</span></div><div><br></div><div>Applications for the 2015-16 cohort are NOW available on-line, and will close on <strong>Monday, August 24, 2015, at 5pm</strong>.
