Fellows are nominated by their university's president and are selected based on their demonstrated commitment to leadership, civic engagement, and problem-solving.

Read about Sophia's commitment to solving difficult public health challenges below:

"My service work focuses on making health improvements for immigrant and international populations. While studying at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, I have the opportunity to work with immigrant communities in Baltimore City to improve their transition to the United States and their experience with the healthcare system. Over the past three years, I have done this by teaching English to Central American immigrants at the Esperanza Center and volunteering in the Emergency Room at St. Agnes Hospital, assisting Spanish-speaking patients before their official translators arrived. I have spent every spring break and summer working with communities in Nicaragua, Panama, and Indonesia on public health programming, teaching English, and anything else the community/nonprofit expresses interest in. It is my passion to learn the languages and cultures of other places and understand their needs. I cannot wait to graduate and continue my life of service to others-at home and abroad!" (Campus Compact)

Sophia is a Global Studies major in the Development, Health and the Environment track, and is pursuing a certificate in Intercultural Communication. She will graduate in May 2018.

To view the full post and read about what Dr. Freeman Hrabowski has to say about Sophia's accomplishments, please visit the Campus Compact website.

<Tagline>Danielle McGrogan: Kigali, Rwanda</Tagline>

Global Studies student Danielle McGrogan is currently studying abroad in Kigali, Rwanda through the School for International Training (SIT). Read more about her experiences living and studying abroad below:

"I am currently studying abroad in Kigali, Rwanda through the School for International Training (SIT). The focus of my study abroad program is to examine the 1994 genocide and the country’s efforts to foster peace, unity, and reconciliation. Through site visits to government organizations and NGOs, I have had the unique opportunity to learn from individuals working in the different disciplines (mental health, media, law, women’s rights, etc.) of reconciliation and transitional justice.

"After spending a month and a half in Rwanda, we went to Uganda for two weeks to learn about the LRA conflict and effective practices to rehabilitate and reintegrate ex-child soldiers back into society. We also had the chance to hear local perceptions on justice and peace in Northern Uganda through discussions with former internally displaced persons (IDPs), former LRA members, and NGOs, including Invisible Children Uganda. One of the many academic highlights thus far has been learning about the effectiveness of home grown solutions such as the Gacaca Courts in Rwanda and Mato Oput in Uganda.

"Apart from thought-provoking site visits and discussions, I also take Kinyarwanda language classes and live with a Rwandan family. My host family has given me insight into local life through sharing meals, improving my language skills, and taking me to events, including weddings and commemoration ceremonies. While Rwandans have many traditions, my favorite is Umuganda. On the last Saturday of each month, communities come together to do a variety of public works. Umuganda can be translated as ‘coming together in common purpose to achieve an outcome’.

"For the last month of my study abroad program in Rwanda, I am doing an independent research project on the repatriation and reintegration experiences of returning Rwandan refugees from neighboring countries. I’m excited to have a month to explore Rwanda on my own while gaining a deeper understanding of a topic I’m interested in. My entire experience in Rwanda has been awe-inspiring and has played an instrumental role in shaping my future aspirations.

"Fun Facts: Rwanda is also known as the Land of a Thousand hills because most of the county is covered by rolling, lush green hills. Rwanda has highest percentage of women in parliament worldwide and was the first country in the world to legislate an outright ban on plastic bags."

Global Studies Students Abroad

<Tagline>Corey Simon: Montevideo, Uruguay</Tagline>

Global Studies student Corey Simon is currently studying abroad at Universidad Católica del Uruguay in Montevideo, Uruguay though ISEP. Read more about her experiences living and studying abroad below:

"I’ve only been in Uruguay for a month (the southern hemisphere academic calendar is different; this semester is March-July), but I’m already in love with this country. Uruguayans are truly some of the friendliest people I’ve ever met. Everyone is more than willing to help you in any way they can, and spending time with friends and family is a top priority. Often, Uruguayans will also offer you mate: a hot, caffeine-rich, herbal infused beverage, typical of Uruguay and Argentina, and traditionally shared among friends. Uruguayans drink it everywhere. It doesn’t matter if you’re in class, on the bus, in the store, on the street etc; you’ll see a ton of people drinking mate. Although a tiny country, Uruguayans also have a lot of national pride, which I got to see in full force at a Uruguay-Brazil soccer game in the stadium that hosted the first World Cup (which Uruguay won).

"In addition to its people, Uruguay’s natural beauty is what makes it such a great place to live. Montevideo is located on Río de la Plata, and people spend a lot of time on la rambla, a boardwalk that goes all along the city coastline. I’m also lucky enough to live with a host family whose apartment is three blocks from the beach. The city is very green, with lots of tree-lined streets and huge parks. Outside of Montevideo, Uruguay is incredibly green as well, as most of the country is composed of small towns and farmland. Uruguay’s population is only about 3.5 million, and cows outnumber people 3:1!

"I’ve spent the past three weekends exploring beach towns up the coast from Montevideo. The bus system is inexpensive and straightforward, so traveling to other parts of the country is very easy. I especially love Cabo Polonio, a rural hamlet located on a peninsula that’s not accessible by road. You can either hike a couple hours through sand dunes (which I did), or take a jeep through the bordering national park. You can see sea lions and dolphins, and during some parts of the year, whales. There isn’t any light pollution at night, so the sky is absolutely incredible, and you feel like you’re in a planetarium.

"I can also not say enough good things about the exchange program and the university. Every international student gets paired up with a Uruguayan student, and there is a welcome commission composed of Uruguayan students that help exchange students get to know one another and become integrated into the university community by organizing special activities and weekend excursions. Most of the exchange students here are from other Latin American countries, so I spend time with a lot of native Spanish-speakers, which is perfect for my language immersion.

"In terms of academics, I’m taking a mix of special courses for international students, including a culture class where we visit different museums and historical sites, as well as regular courses alongside Uruguayans. I’m also volunteering through the university’s service learning center at a non-profit called Gurises Unidos, which works with underprivileged youth. Not only is it a wonderful experience, but it also gives me a window into a side of Montevideo I wouldn’t otherwise see.

"Uruguay is not very popular with exchange students, and most people traveling through South America skip it, but I strongly recommend you don’t make that mistake!"
