GLBL major Farah Helal named USM Student Regent!
Governor Hogan announced Farah Helal's appointment to the USM Board of Regents as a student regent in February and she was formally confirmed in March. She will serve as one of two USM student regents from July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2024, including as a voting member during her second year.
She will represent the USM student voice in meetings and committees working on issues that impact the system's twelve institutions. Key topics involve setting tuition and fee rates, approving new degree programs, and approving capital and operating budgets.

The program aims to provide student interns with opportunities both educationally and professionally substantive in nature. The purpose of the program is to provide students with insight into the work of U.S. foreign policy and the administration of the U.S. Department of State and its diplomatic facilities around the world. Specific duties and responsibilities vary according to the domestic office or overseas post of assignment. Awards available for students in need!
The Louis L. Kaplan Scholarship is now accepting applications.
This scholarship is awarded to deserving undergraduate students at UMBC who have achieved a minimum 3.0 grade point average, have junior or senior status, have made contributions to the community, and who demonstrate financial need.
The Louis L. Kaplan Scholarship was established November 24, 1981, by the Student Government Association at UMBC in recognition of Dr. Kaplan’s contributions to UMBC during his tenure as Interim Chancellor. It was Dr. Kaplan’s wish, when the fund was first established, that students who displayed academic promise be assisted financially in order to continue their education at UMBC.
Minimum eligibility requirements:
- Must be an undergraduate junior or senior student (60 minimum credits by Fall);
- Maintain a cumulative 3.0 GPA; and
- Have made valuable contributions to the UMBC community.
Demonstrate financial need (FAFSA) preferred.
Eligible candidates should submit:
- A current resume
- An unofficial UMBC transcript
- 1-3 letters of recommendation from a UMBC faculty or staff member
- A maximum 250-word written statement demonstrating significant contribution to the UMBC Campus Community

Consider applying to the Global Pathways for Students (GPS) Albrecht Fellowship Program. The GPS Program is a unique opportunity for 25 high-achieving college students to “get the inside scoop” from executives from globally minded, leading companies in the region. Past participants include: Lockheed Martin, Stanley Black & Decker, Jhpiego, T. Rowe Price, Ciena, Under Armour, McCormick, PeaceCorps, and the U.S. State Department, and more. The Georgetown University Political Science Predoctoral Summer Institute is a week-long training program for students who are considering pursuing a PhD in political science or a closely related field. The Institute offers an opportunity to meet other undergraduate students with similar interests, and to interact and network with faculty and graduate students from Georgetown University. You will learn more about the substance and methods of political science and about political science PhD programs, discuss your research interests, and workshop application materials.
What are our goals?
The discipline of political science poses and answers critical questions about governance and power. The questions our discipline asks depend in large part on who is posing them. For political science to contribute to meeting the diverse challenges of the 21st century, faculty and graduate students must have the background, expertise, and perspective to engage in fundamentally new thinking, questioning, and theorizing. The Political Science Predoctoral Summer Institute (PS-PSI) seeks to encourage those outcomes by increasing the diversity of applicants to political science PhD programs; boosting the acceptance rate of under-represented and disadvantaged students; enhancing the diversity of PhD programs; and thereby improving inclusion and equity in the profession and contributing to a more comprehensive study of politics.

What is included?
The PS-PSI pays for your travel expenses and for your lodging at Georgetown, and provides you with a $1,000 stipend. We offer you relevant materials in advance of the PS-PSI to help you prepare; provide the materials you will use at the Institute; and connect you with excellent resources to help you continue your path forward after the Institute.
Who should apply?
We encourage applications from juniors and seniors attending colleges and universities in DC, DE, MD, VA, and WV, who are majoring in and have demonstrated academic achievement in political science or a similar field of study, and hope to apply to a doctoral program in the next two years. The Institute is especially interested in students from underrepresented and disadvantaged backgrounds who are likely to contribute to political science meeting the diverse challenges of the 21st century.

This four week course meets online Thursdays 4.30-7 and is perfect for those who haven't yet had the chance to go abroad; it meets the GLBL Study Abroad requirement!Still hoping to go abroad next spring or later? You can still take this course as one of your GLBL electives, and it provides an excellent foundation in the cross-cultural competencies that will serve you well in your future travels.
This course is taught through an experiential learning framework the goal of which is to enhance global competence skills and instill a spirit of civic engagement in Global Studies majors. GLBL 496 meets the Global Studies Global Experience Requirement.
The Center for Democracy and Civic Life is looking for three undergraduate students to join our team as 2022-23 interns. Interns support the Center's programs and initiatives, working collaboratively with other members of the staff. Each intern has a particular area of focus, but all members of the team are involved in developing and producing the Center's work. Interns work either 10-15 or 15-20 hours per week during the academic year, with some variation explained below.
The internship positions available for 2022 - 2023 are:
Graphic Design Intern (15-20 hours/week): The graphic design intern creates program materials, advertisements, reports, and web pages aligned with the Center for Democracy and Civic Life's visual iconography, and suggests design possibilities to other members of the team.
Community Civic Engagement Intern (10-15 hours/week): The community civic engagement intern supports Alternative Spring Break and other programs that position students as agents of change in the Baltimore region. Alternative Spring Break will take place from March 19 - 24, 2023, during UMBC's Spring Break, and the community civic engagement intern must be available throughout that week.
Political Engagement Intern (15-20 hours/week): The political engagement intern supports programs that connect UMBC students with the legislative process in Annapolis, engage them in politics and pathways to political leadership, and encourage their participation in local, state, and national elections. The political engagement intern also supports the Center for Democracy and Civic Life's research projects and contributions to national higher education initiatives.
All interns positions pay $12.50/hour for fall 2022, $13.25/hour for spring 2023.

- Caramelized onion (these are option but must be caramelized in advance if you're going to use them!
- 1 clove of garlic
