March Expectations for STEM LLC Action needed! Hi everyone,

Happy March! Wanted to send some reminders on here as we start a new month. Please check out what is expected during March and make sure to get it done!
  1. Attend one workshop: There are two different faculty panels you can choose from. The links are posted in the Events section on this page.
  2. Meet 1-1 with Lucie: Another one of the requirements for the spring semester is to meet with me. This will be a 20 minute conversation, either in person or online. Here is the link to sign up for the meeting. You may need to go forward a few weeks to find a time slot. I will follow up with a meeting link or instructions for where my office is located.
  3. Meet with your Peer Leader: Make sure you have connected with them this semester. They want to meet with you and see how things have been going!

Deadlines and timelines!
The deadline to apply to be a Grit Guide for the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and Orientation is Friday, December 3. We hope to be able to make employment offers prior to winter break and to train our new hires when we return to campus for the spring semester. (All trainings will be paid!)

In addition to filling out the application, we are also asking applicants to complete a video submission. You may choose one of four prompts. The prompts are within the application. Don't worry; we do not expect professional-quality videos! Use whatever device or technology is available to you, and have fun with it! This is all about showing us your personality and letting us get to know you a bit before we meet you. Please note that applications are not complete without the video, and incomplete applications will not be accepted. Videos uploaded later than 11:59pm on December 3 may not be accepted. Transitioning into college is not always easy… especially if you are the first in your family to attend, if you are a part of a marginalized community, or if you regularly find yourself with more questions than answers. Don’t worry, we are here to help!

Initiatives for Identity, Inclusion & Belonging (i3b) has partnered with the Academic Success Center to bring you three sessions that focus on helping you develop the skills and tools you need to experience first-year success! Sessions will take place virtually on October 19 and 26 and November 2 from 5:00-6:30 p.m. Not only will we explore academic success skills and principles, but we will also explore tools for navigating issues of discrimination, bias, and microaggressions within academic spaces, and focus on the many ways our identities are assets within the college environment.
  • Session 1 - How to College: Exploring tools for first-year students
    • This session will explore university resources, key skills for first-year transition success, and will connect attendees with upper-class students who will share their own stories and recommendations for first-year success.
  • Session 2 - How to College: Knowing What to Expect and How to Navigate Challenges
    • This session will explore issues of bias, discrimination, and microaggressions - how they show up in university spaces, how to recognize them, and how to lessen their impact. Attendees will leave with tools and skills to help navigate identity-based challenges during their academic transition.
  • Session 3 - How to College: Bringing you into the classroom
    • Have you heard of Cultural Wealth? Do you know that your identities are assets in university spaces? This session will explore the ways students bring Cultural Wealth into the classroom and will introduce attendees to returning students who have learned how to advocate for themselves and be authentic in classroom spaces despite sometimes being the only one who shares their identity.

The annual Women of Color (WOC) STEM conference is taking place VIRTUALLY, October 7-9, 2021. The conference features leadership and professional development programs in addition to a career fair where many top national and local companies in the STEM fields are actively recruiting STEM interns and professionals.

 

You will need to register to participate. Open to ALL students! Deadline to register is Wednesday, October 6th. You can still register to participate after the deadline. However it will take about 15-30 minutes for registrations to be activated and to gain access to the platform.

 

·       The job fair is free! To participate in the job fair only, click on register and proceed as a “job seeker” (top right).

·       The fee for attending the full conference is only $25 when you use the promotion code (NOTE: The code will be posted here at a later date). Without the access code, the college student registration fee is $50.

·       Register as a “student” if you plan to participate in other parts of the conference (in addition to the career fair).
