Staff will be available to help facilitate conversation.</p><p><strong>Workshop for Researchers: Science communication and engagement with religious publics<br></strong><strong>Noon – 4 p.m., Library 7th Floor  - walk-ins are welcome!</strong></p><p>Are you involved in public science engagement, or thinking about it? Are you interested in promoting dialogue about science with a broader spectrum of individuals and communities? Are you concerned about effectively navigating potential tensions at the intersections of science, culture, and faith in your classroom, your laboratory, on social media, in policy discussions, or in public settings? Then this workshop is for you. It is geared toward STEM researchers. The limit is 50 participants and as of tonight we are not at capacity per registration, so <strong>walk-ins will be welcome, including undergraduate researchers, </strong>as space allows. </p><p><strong>Public Panel: Science engagement and dialogue with faith communities<br></strong><strong>5:30 – 7 p.m., University Center Ballroom<br></strong>Open to the public, followed by a heavy hors d'oeuvres reception. Panelists include four leaders active in work at the intersection of science and faith. They are scientists who personally practice a range of faiths and bring a rich set of stories around how their own experiences have influenced their work. The panel is moderated by Steve Freeland, director of the Individualized Study Program at UMBC and himself a leader in work at this intersection. </p><p>Please join us however you can and share with others! </p></div></div>

Please let me know by next Friday 3/15 if you would like to attend.<div>-----</div><div><div><span>NIGMS invites you and your undergraduate students to attend our annual </span><span><a href="https://www.nigms.nih.gov/News/meetings/ECI/Pages/default.aspx" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Early-Career Investigator Lecture</a></span><span>, featuring </span><span><a href="https://www.nigms.nih.gov/News/meetings/Pages/2019-NIGMS-Directors-Early-Career-Investigator-Lecture.aspx" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Melissa A. Wilson</a></span><span> </span><span>speaking about sex-biased genome evolution. The lecture, followed by specially planned activities, will occur on Wednesday, April 10 at 10 am, on the NIH campus. The goal of this lecture series is to expose undergraduate students to energetic investigators working at the cutting edge of science.   </span><br></div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><p> </p><p>Dr. Wilson is a computational biologist at Arizona State University. She will explain how her research team traces the evolution of sex chromosomes (X and Y), studies medical conditions related to sex chromosomes, and examines why mutation rates differ between males and females. Her focus is on mammals, but she is also curious about the sex-biased biology of flies, worms, lizards, and plants.</p><p> </p><p>Following the 30-minute lecture, students may ask Dr. Wilson about her research, her career path, and what advice she has for those interested in scientific research.</p><p> </p><p>We invite students able to stay longer to join the speaker for lunch at 12:00. At 1:30 pm, we are offering a tour at the National Library of Medicine, which houses digital medical resources, the <span><a href="https://www.nlm.nih.gov/research/visible/visible_human.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Visible Human Project</a></span>, and the <span><a href="https://www.nlm.nih.gov/hmd/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">History of Medicine</a></span> collections and exhibits. Undergraduate students attending the lecture last year told us that they really enjoyed the <span><a href="https://infocus.nlm.nih.gov/2017/12/06/we-clue-you-in-about-nlm-toursand-invite-you-to-join-us/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">NLM tour</a></span>.</p><p> </p><p>We are hoping to have a close-to-final headcount for the lecture, lunch, and NLM tour by March 15.  </p></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div>
